Here's a look at what I've been up to since Steve's bass.
This will be piezo plus magnetic.

How much would that thing cost?

As wonderful as it looks - well made, the wood looks beautiful, particularly the fretboard - it looks very uncomfortable. Personally I'd have modified the shape quite a lot
not to knock your work. In itself it's flawless as always :thumb:

This is my more expensive model, so a lot.

But then it wouldn't be my shape :p
Seriously though, it's pretty comfortable to hold, plus I'm doing a bit more 'comfort shaping' than I usually do.
That is epic.
Agreed!
if it doesn't work out you could always just put hinges on it and use it as a case for one of your other basses.

oh wow that is awesome.

I don't think it looks that uncomfortable. Probably not that different from a normal acoustic bass.
Awesome work!

Yeah, it's actually much more comfortable than a normal acoustic.

It was a nice stripe in a piece of Macassar Ebony, so I resawed and bookmatched it.
Sanded out and one coat of finish...

The figuring on the top is gorgeous. And the fretboard V thing is really nice too, could be an inlay of sorts.
How heavy is this going to be though? And do you ever do painted finishes on your instruments? I can't recall seeing any.

You could always come up with another..? :p
Seriously though, a hollowbody being a new vein for the guitar line I'd have thought that some things would naturally be changed, including the shape, however subtly.
It looks a lot better part-finished. Still not my cup of tea but it doesn't look so thick and boxed

SoM, your work never ceases to amaze me. You have an uncanny ability to make wood do absolutely anything you want.

Probably, depends on what you have in mind I guess.

Sometimes it's hard to tell whether it's that or the other way around...
So anyways, a little update.
Wiring, finish, and stringing it up...

Out of curiosity, if you're going to make a bass look that impressive, why only put one pickup in it? I mean, ok, you've got 6 knobs to control the tone, how's about also putting in two pickups?
Son of Magni

It's a piezo bridge...

but it's not a pickup, it's a piezo.
Geez, I thought you'd know this SoM

The bass would have to have a lot more wood for a second pickup.
Besides, on an acoustic a neck and piezo seem like they would be more than satisfactory.
Son of Magni
05-25-2008, 09:42 AM
Well, technically each saddle is a piezo pickup. So there's a total of 8 pickups on the bass :)

Yah a piezo doesn't pick up, it puts down. Jeez.

That thing is just huge. Incredible. How much does it weigh?
And what do the controls do?

It was nine lbs before I put the hardware on, so I'm guessing 11.
The piezo goes into a passive tone, then the piezo and magnetic pups go into a blend control. Next is three band eq with the mid shift pull switch. Then master volume.
