Would you listen to and promote a really talented, great band if they were openly KKK members and hated not only black people but Muslims and Latinos?

I would.

I'd promote them even if they weren't talented...just joshing but it depends on what their music incorporated. If the lyrics are all about killing Muslims, Latinos, Jews, etc, I probably wouldn't because it's boring. But if they were openly that way but their music seperated itself from that i would.

Ancient Rites are kind of racist sometimes, what with lyrics like

Azure eyed and golden haired
Forth the knights templar fared
While above troops devoted
Heraldic banners floated

I think they chickened out on becoming full-blown racists

Hmm...tough call. A similar dilemma is often made over Herbert von Karajan (guy in my avatar). He is considered to be one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century, but he grew up in Nazi Germany and was an active member of the Nazi Party. Many argue that he joined the party just to advance his career, but...still. Orff was a White Rose, after all...which makes him alot easier to respect.

I dont think that a persons views has much to do with their music. Sure maybe their music will have a lot of eneral hate in it but a lot of music does, i love deathmetal. The only way i can see their beliefs even being part of anyones concern is in their lyrics, and to be honest, i would still represent them bc if i didnt just because of their beliefs, then in a way, im doing the same thing they are by being biased.

Det_Nosnip
05-01-2008, 11:43 AM
Yeah, but being biased against biased people is ok.

racism to me is funny and okay to joke about, but you have to be aware that there are people who have to deal with the wrong end of racism everyday and for them, it's serious stuff.

It's hard to say, if someone calls me a whop, I laugh it off, I guess it's all about how you say it.

Varg Vikernes is racist and whilst Burzum is not overtly racist in its lyrics it still is racist. The same is true at least for early Absurd. I don't know much about later Absurd where they seem to have gone to being another skinhead band.

In an early interview 1993 or something he said that the holocaust was a lie but he wishes that it did happen because he'd love to see 6 million jews die.

Also just because you listen to a band that doesn't mean you agree with everything they believe in. Listening to the Beatles doesn't make you a hippie. Listening to Wagner doesn't make you antisemetic.

I think when it comes to issues like racism in music it's a complex and fragile topic. I for one, don't think racism should be promoted in any sense, whether its against any group of people. Yes, you should be open minded and base your interest in a band on their music, but when that music incorporates a hateful message with real intent to spread that viewpoint, then you must question your own morals and principles if you accept it.

I think religion seems to be a softer target, on the surface bands like slayer and such like promote anti-christian messages, but really its more of a persona than the bandmates personal beliefs. I read that Tom Araya is actually a catholic, which is hard to believe, and vindicated slayer by claiming it was just an artistic image. Conversely, there's black metal bands who go out and burn churches and kill priests.

With racism in music, It's sometimes hard to judge what's truly racist and what's just poking fun. I think that bands who openly promote these negative views and encourage violence against their targetted groups shouldn't be supported.

I thought we were starting to progress on from these backward mentalities which have plagued society for too long.

I respect the fact that you're giving well thought out posts, but I'm really not willing to get into another one of these debates. They always get ugly and people usually stick to their guns anyway.
