I play in a Prog/metal band and I'm have troubles with what i think is my EQing. It seems like the only thing that cuts through the mix is my lowest string (I tune BF#BE) and when i turn up to accommodate for the other strings the low B is far too loud and sounds shitty and distorted. I cranked the mids and cut the bass (not completely of course) but got the same result. I don't really think is my rig, i'm playing an sr2000, with a GK700rb-II powering an ampeg 410-HE and a brand new Avatar 212. Any suggestions??
You can keep the low's where you had them but bring your High's up. It should bring your higher chords even with your lows.
If not, learn to play your lows softer to even it out that way.

Try lowering the pickup underneath the heaviest string to even it out more.
A compressor might help a bit

^^ I think this might be it, my bass has a P/J setup and one of the P pups is higher than the rest. I'll lower it and see what happens.

Personally I'd set everything on the bass flat and EQ everything out on the amp. Try cutting the bass slightly, leave the low mids flat, boost the high mids a bit and boost the treble a little.
Should help clean things up for you.
You might also want to change the angle your pickups are at, they might be too high on the bass side.
EDIT: beaten.
