im teaching myself slap but since i learnt this one song by RHCP i find it really hard trying different beats and rhythms.
has anyone else found this?

Try finding another funk song with an entirely different rhythm and learning it. Take it slow, but once you get it, you should be out of the little rut you've gotten into.

Don't manage to playing some difficult songs when you just start this technique

Most RHCP songs (hell, most slap grooves in general) are just alternating between the thumb and index in 16ths with certain notes muted or left out to form the rhythms and syncopations. Try to think of it that way. Play a groove of straight 16ths, then leave out and mute certain notes to your liking. It's kind of like how guitarists use rest strokes in their strumming.

Also when you feel comfortable, try to get into double popping or eventually double thumbing and you will find you can play a lot more interesting rhythmic figures that weren't possible before.
