I thought it might be cool if people posted what their trademark or "thing" was when they played bass/wrote their bass lines.

My personal one is I always prefer playing the higher frets around 12th and above.

Oh, I also play slap bass with my penis... the women love my calluses.

YYZ is an instrumental by Rush. It's considered one of their hardest songs to play, at least bass-wise.

I use a lot of 3-fret chromatics when I play. Here's an example of the main bassline to one song I have partially written:

C||---------*-------------------|---------*-----------------------|
G||---------R-------------7-----|---------R-11-10-9---------------|
D||---------E-------7-8-9---9---|---------E---------11-10-9-7\9---|
A||---------S-7-8-9-------------|---------S-----------------------|
E||--7----7-T-------------------|--7----7-T-----------------------|
B||---------*-------------------|---------*-----------------------|

|||--Q----S-S-S-S-S-S-S-S-S-E.--|--Q----S-S--S--S-S--S--S-S-S--E.-|

Also, when I write, I really like to use a lot of sus2 chords. I feel that the lack of a third leaves the chords general tonality somewhat ambiguous and interpretive, as it can be either major or minor depending on where it's placed in the progression.

It all depends on how I'm playing...

Slapping: Either OHP fills, or popping the seventh then hammering-on to the root (i.e. at the octave)
Finger: Rocco Prestia type stacatto
Pick: Chromatic runs starting a fifth above the root and heading back down

Normal speed lines (for thrash anyway) I tend to use a lot of ghost notes and syncopated pedaltone stuff. At faster speeds my lines tend to gallop or if I'm riding a note I tend to groove in a triplet feel.

please don't buy into the farce that the 6th is special or superior to any other interval. It's only use is for nubs to be able to say "My bass plays teh 6th its teh roxxor ur teh sux".
unless your current interval is broken you will see no gain by using a 6th.

explain that one to me

I was always taught that a ghost note isn't a note you actually play, but 'ghost' play so as to continue the feel of the piece, whereas a mute, you're actually plucking the muted string.

Basically, the difference is that you're not supposed to hear a ghost note.

Accent: In music, an accent is an emphasis placed on a particular note, either as a result of its context or specifically indicated by an accent mark. A tonic accent is an emphasis on a note by virtue of being higher in pitch than surrounding notes. ...

Ghost note: Ghost notes are musical notes occurring in a rhythmic figure which are purposely deemphasized, often nearly to the point of silence.

with the jazz trio I play a lot of polyrhythms, along with the drummer while the piano player stays with the original 4/4 swung feel.

I also use a lot of ghost notes/muted notes/whatever the hell they are with the reggae band. I use a lot of palm muting too.

I always thought a ghost note was the same as a muted note, or at least a really quiet note. Kind of like ghost notes on the snare, barely audible.

Accent is a way of playing a note, not a general term for note emphasis... it's a quicker, sharper attack with a faster delay (rough description I know). You can still play a note that way but have it be a de-emphasised note in a series...

For example, play all your notes like that and have them all Forte except one Piano. You've just found a "ghost" note that's played with an accent.

At the moment, I'm playing broken major 9th chords and sometimes tapping the 8ve of the 5th or 9th quite a lot.
Apart from that, I got through phases of what I play.
I like to use 5ths 9ths and octaves in syncopation with the drums or guitar, depending on what style/chord progression I'm playing with.
I'm quite fond of descending chromatic fills from the high 8ve down to the 5th
