Hey guys, it's been ages since I started a thread. Anyways...

I am wanting to create a Myspace profile for my music which so far consists of me playing covers arranged for solo bass and me singing over it.

The question is because these are not my own songs will I be allowed to do this and if so will I have to pay somebody?

I thought I would be able to get away with it as I'm not going to charge people to download it and I'm not making a album in which to make a profit so if I'm not making anything out of these covers I don't need to pay the original artists, right?

Anyways all help greatly appreciated, Mike :)

A friend of mine and I made a fake band that consisted of nothing but punk covers of a couple oldies... We posted the songs on a myspace page and have had no problem. People do that sort of thing all the time. I wouldn't worry about it.

And if it'd make you feel any better, just drop some people a few emails explaining you want to use the songs for a non-profit project and see what they say.

Well it will only matter if certain people see it. Technically I don't think it's allowed but I've seen bands do it before without a problem. I've have a song from Ocarina of Time on my profile for months now and no one's said anything yet.

I've uploaded numerous songs from Tool, APC, Ashes dIvide, etc. and nothing has happened. Don't worry about it. Just upload.

I know what you want to do. You want to cover songs. Thus, they are more your own. We are saying that we flat out are uploading other bands' music as our own, which is much more serious than what you are looking to do, and we are just fine.

Truthfully, the MySpace team doesn't have the manpower or will to do anything about it.

Nobody cares. And why would they? If you were a multi-million dollar artist, would you really shed a tear that some solo bass act with 3,000 plays on MySpace did a poorly recorded version of one of your one-hit wonders?

Creative commons copyright laws are so archaic anyways that they are almost completely irrelevant. The legislation is literally decades behind the media and technology.

i had my songs removed and account deleted because it was covers i guess. they just shut it down without saying anything.
