I need some help identifying a bass I bought. Its an Ibanez 4 string PJ. It says EX in red on the headstock. It has a wizard looking neck with sharktooth inlays. It had passive pickups but I replaced them with Seymour Duncan BassLines active 9 volt set. Thats about all i know about it.. I have looked and not been able to find any info on it. Some one told me it might be an EX III but i cant find any info on that..It is in mint condition and plays great just tryin to find out what year/model it is..Thanks in advance..

Can you get some pictures up? That will definitely help with the IDing process. I'm not too sure based on your description, but I'd like to see it.

Serial number? It's likely made in 1990 or 1991.

Thanks.

Threadstarter, is there a letter before the serial number?

Nope the neckplate Has Ibanez and under that it lists the number. Am I correct to guess that it is a 91 model year?

No letter? That's a little odd.

It could be, depends which factory and country it came from.

Check the back of the headstock. Any engravings?

no engravings back of headstock is bare dosen't even say what country.. I got it off ebay almost a year ago for $150 with HSC and a new set of ernie balls. I really don't want to take the neck plate off to see if there is anything engraved under it.

It'd be on the headstock if there is.

Hard to say exactly where it was made if that's the only number.

My guess is Japan, 1991.

Could always take neck off and look in the neck pocket.

I would rather not take the neck off.. I thought about it but talked myself out of it. I would'nt want to take the chance of screwing anything up on it. Ya know? Thanks everyone for the help!

It's hard to screw something up with that. Take off the strings, uncsrew the 4 screws attaching the neck. Simple as that.

Oakford...Thats not to far. I live in Pana. If I get some free time I will pull the neck and check under it. Good to see a fellow Illinoisian here.

So in all is this bass woth anything? I don't plan on selling it I'm just trying to get a feel for what its worth.. Plus I was just wanting to know some background on it. I have a strange feeling that I paid as much for the pups as the bass is worth.

Ibanez EXB405 - http://www.ibanezregister.com/Gallery/basses/ex/gal-exb405.htm

Harmony Central reviews are showing about the same price you paid for it, so it's not too bad.

I checked out the Ibanez register and didn't see anything exactly like mine. The exb504 is as close as it came, However it had a different logo on the headstock. The reviews were for similiar basses but much like everything else its all about the opinion of the reviewer. Most of them had stock pups. when I got mine it too had stock pup that sounded decent when they worked. The pots were trashed and only worked occasionaly.

I replaced my pups with seymour duncan BassLines. I think they sound great. Its had passive tronics stock. It was a bit of a trick to get the battery to fit with out routing a place for it. Does anybody know if they make a stero jack for active electronics that has a long threaded piece to get through the body? I had to mount the stero jack in the cavity cover. The original jack was real long to get through the body and the new one is short. I havent been able to locate one from switchcraft.
