OK, I'm modifying my vintage 70s Fender Squier Jazz Bass.

I'm going to be ordering this (http://www.guitar-mod.com/rg_jsample.html) assembly, and I have a choice of pick-ups.

The choices are in the first dropdown box here (http://www.guitar-mod.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=J100&Category_Code=PJA).

Mind you, I'm mostly going to be using the assembly to make a more P-bass sounding tone, so which pick-ups should I be looking into getting?

You've put the links on incorrectly
If you want a P-bass tone why not get a P-bass?
How expensive is that preamp?
The pickups offered are very expensive. This comes back to # 2. Just get a P for that tone.
None of the pickups offered were created for nor will get you that P-bass sound

I'm going with the idea of one great bass > two decent basses.

i see what you want man. the j just looks better. plus i bet you prefer the jazz shape and neck. just prefer the punch. join the club lol. i would check out the duncan quarter pounder series. have not used the j pups, but the p pups are punchy suckers. then again, you could get crafty and change the pup configuration. either put a mm at the bridge instead, or remove the neck j, putty up the hole, and re-rout for a p, to make it a special j bass. (it is called either a special j, or a special p. wich one it is classified as depends on the shape of the body and neck, in your case, its in the jazz form.)

Do you have any guides for that? Because you lost me.

This is my first time modding.

exactly what do you want, the feel of a j, but with an authentic p sound, or a j, that just has a little more punch to it?

The former.

Then buy a P bass and put a J neck on it.

I agree with the quarter-pounders, they beef up the sound rather well and make them nice and punchy. If you're really looking to mod the hell out of it, as J_F said, it'd be great to find a beefy pickup and swap it out: bit of routing involved, but it'll likely end up being worth it :)

Im doing pretty much the same with mine soon, although slightly different; i'm sticking an MM in the neck of my Jazz. I'm hoping it'll sound good, got the materials now, just waiting for tools.

Whatever you decide, good luck :thumb:

cool don't go to close to the neck joint. you can check to see what harmonics or octives fall around that area to get an idea on the rang of sound you'll be in. for the thread starter, if you decide to route for a new pickup, it would be easier to add a mm pup. have someone tell you how far it is from the 12 fret to get it in a good location. adding p pups in place of the neck j would probably mean locating a jazz shaped pickguard with no pup space made, and make for a precision set

My plan is to have it overlap where the old J-pup was at the top, and point more toward the bridge, almost as a middle pup rather than a neck :)

Always wanted DarkStars but damn are they expensive :upset:

And to TS, it IS definitely easier to route for an MM pup, plus you don't have to worry about any extra gaps in the wood that may be created with a P-pup
