View Full Version : Input Jack Question

I have built a guitar and I am ready to install the electronics, but I have never done this from scratch before. :smash:

Reguarding the input jack, it one with 3 "prongs" from Switchcraft. I am installing active pickups, and was told this switch was required over the normal 2 "prong" swiches used with passive pickups. (Hot, Battery, Ground, if I am not mistaken?)

Anyway, my question is, how do I know which wire should be soldered to which prong or does it matter?

Thank you for any help. Please forgive my ignorance on this subject. I've searched the internet but can't seem to find what I am looking for.

Ok, I haven't dealt with active pickups but the standard trick with using a stereo jack (instead of a mono jack, which has two prongs) is that you use the extra prong as a switch for the power source. Take the jack and observe what happens when you insert the cable into it.

- The sleeve (signal ground) conductor of the cable makes contact with the sleeve of the jack.
- The tip (hot) of the cable makes contact with one of the prongs of the jack.
- The sleeve (ground conductor) of the cable makes contact with the other prong, which shorts the prong to the sleeve.

I *think* you would then connect the battery to that last prong and the signal ground to the power source of your circuit, but that's probably wrong. I wish I had one of them in front of me. You're going to have to think it thru and do the right thing, just think of it as a jack with a switch built in and you'll be ok.
