are there any good references on the best way to dress and level frets yourself? i looked into having it done by a local shop and they charge $60 for it. is that a good price?
thanks for the help.

frets.com has a few articles where they do refrets, including the leveling. It's pretty easy to do. You need something flat and straight, some of the fine Metal Sand sandpaper, and some double sided tape. Tape the sandpaper to the flat thing and lightly go up and down the neck with it. Some people mark the frets with marker so they can see where they've sanded easier. The idea is to sand enough that every part of every fret gets sanded. That way you know they're all the same height.
Then do the same thing with something to polish it (emery cloth).
