hey, trying to find out how to get the shape of the fretboard right. i want a 24 fret fender jazz. have an idea of how to do it, but not sure if its right. would i take the width at the nut, the width at the end, the distance between, and draw lines at the points? if so, what are those widths and the distances between them?

huh? get the nut width, get the heel width. Connect them. Boom done. But! Make sure you have a center line. And make it equal distance side to side. For the frets, you will have to find calculations. Or someone here may have them.

like a so. Ask in the bass forum for the widths. I mean it won't be a big deal if you are slightly off. You are making the body anyways.
then when you figure where the heel is connecting to the body, take your back center line, come off both sides equally and make it square in the area you need. So don't worry that the whole neck and fretboard may be angled the whole way down.
here is what I mean in red.
