View Full Version : Just bought a kit -- good deal? Used Yamaha Stage Custom

Yamaha Stage Custom. Black. I think it's missing a tom, since there are two rackmount toms. I don't know if this kit generally had a real floor tom or a racked "floor" tom. I got a hi hat stand (with worthless clutch), and another cymbal stand (no boom) along with a ride stand with drum mount attached. The mounting setup on the bass drum accommodates two toms or cymbals, but only one is attached. I also got the Yamaha kick pedal and beater.
I got a set of Sabian B8 hats and ride, and a Sabian AAX Stage Crash (20") also. The hat stand has a bad clutch but I just bought a $15 Gibraltar clutch with a stick hit release for if/when I get a double bass.
I paid $400 total. The heads (except kick head) are all in pretty bad shape and the set has its share of dings but it looks like it's in good playing condition.
No pics yet but I'll try and do that in a little bit. I'm mainly a guitarist and bassist
Good deal?

Yes.
Just plain yes.
That is exactly the kind of deal somebody trying to get into drums needs to find. $400 for just the drums is a really good deal but you got an AAX crash which is about $250 by itself and then a set of B8's which are around $200 for both.
Great deal.

Thanks guys. I didn't know anything about which model kit it was gonna be (or the cymbals) but I knew it was Yamaha. My friend sold it to me, and I have no idea how he came into this kit, because I've never heard him and this has been stashed away in his laundry room since he brought it down in the summer. He said it was a Yamaha 4 piece, couldn't remember the model. Once he said cymbals+hardware are included I just said yeah I'll do it as long as it functions properly and nothing is broken. I'm on a payment type plan of $100 down and then $150 every two weeks for a month. I work part time (20 hrs) but have to take care of other expenses also.
Yesterday I was able to take the set to my drummer's house since his kit is at school and he'd rather not have to lug his kit to and from school especially considering he doesn't have a car. The last kit that was in his house was belonged to another friend, but she never gigged and my drummer does, so he used a couple times and it got a couple scratches and she took it away. I don't care about scratches on my gear and it's supposed to be played and gigged, so until I move off campus, he can use it any way he wants. He's an experienced drummer and we agreed he would replace anything he breaks (excluding sticks, since that happens)) and said he would tune it up and everything since I don't know how to tune drums.
Over the next year I'll gradually upgrade the problem areas of the kit, though I know that its a never ending process since heads wear out, etc. Maybe get some nice hats and a nicer ride and eventually add another crash. If I seem to be getting a lot better I'll add the double bass and try to incorporate that. I've had 4 years off and on experience with the drums since in high school my drummer would leave his kit in my house since we were neighbors and our band practiced there, so I learned the basics and have a good sense of rhythm. I'm not looking to be the very best, but I want to be able to drum for my solo music with multi tracking, guitar, bass, vox and keys. **** drum kit from hell and all the other drum sequencers. It's not the same.
So what's the best cheap way to dampen the bass drum? I've seen the pillow method so I figured I'd do that but if you have any better advice I'd appreciate it.
Thanks a lot for your help by the way. The Drum forums are so much nicer than the guitar forums. Already someone would have said "n00b" or whatever the **** they need to say to feel good about themselves.

I'm surprised that you say that this section is better than others. You probably haven't been to other threads, have you?
Thanks, though.

The pillow method works fine although alot of drummers (myself included) prefer something smaller, like a little blanket rolled up inside, just touching both heads.

Yeah, flaming on the drum forum is fairly minimal although some threads get into massive lengthy discussions/disagreements/arguments about the stupidest of miniscule details.

I don't think I need to say that that was a good deal.
:smash:
If you want, you could buy a multi-clamp and tom arm and then mount the second rack in a normal floor position.

Your avatar is awesome. I've been on the guitar forums for five years now and been playing guitar for ten but I always try to be helpful to newer guitarists because I'd have appreciated it when I was new to have people who would give some constructive help.
I've already got the second rack tom working off my ride stand, so I'm set in that regard. I might add another floor tom though to make it a 5 piece kit. Whenever money allows it.

Yeah, you have a pretty solid set up. Heads can be replaced, I'd recommend Remo Pinstripes on the toms and probably a Remo Ambasador on the snare. But that's just my personal choice. And the cymbals should last you a while. If the 2nd tom is 14" or bigger it should be placed opposite your snare (or it could be and it wouldn't look funny, but I'd recommend that)
But my general idea is if you get decent cymbals and any kind of drum set with custom in it's name for $400 you did good.
