what do you wanna know?

I've accepted the fact that there's probably no good hardcore. I just want to know about city life I guess.

Is there a lot to do? How are the beaches nearby? Hot girls? I hear kangaroos chill everywhere? How's public transit? Is Australia a bad place for an arachnophobe? Is it expensive to live there? That kinda thing.

sgrevs
03-28-2008, 12:20 AM
Brissie has some good beaches around, lots of hot girls. Kangaroos not chilling everywhere lol. It's a terrible place for an arachnaphobe, I too have to suffer. Cost depends where you are, I'm fairly sure Brissie is a fair bit cheaper than Sydney. I couldn't tell you about public transport, but I think the trains up that way aren't so great.

br3ad_man
03-28-2008, 12:26 AM
I can answer some of those.

Is there a lot to do?

If you're visiting there's plenty to do.

How are the beaches nearby?

The ones down here (50 minutes south of Brisbane) are great. At least far better than any beach I ever went to when I lived in America, except for maybe when I went to Hawaii.

I hear kangaroos chill everywhere?

Down here we get a lot of them, especially if you're not in a built up area.

How's public transit?

I take the train to uni 3 days a week and it's great, pretty cheap too if you have a student card. The last train home for me leaves at like 11:30 on weeknights and 12:20 or something on weekends though, which makes it completely useless for going to shows. Buses run a lot later and probably most train lines too. Buses here are **** though. They're always way late and full, at least the buses I get are.

Is Australia a bad place for an arachnophobe?

In a word, yeah.

Is it expensive to live there?

Not overly. It's definitely cheaper than Sydney, but then I don't exactly live there so I don't know what's available and stuff.

santi3hg
03-28-2008, 12:28 AM
Wow my image of Australia just went out the ****ing window. Wtf are there at least koalas everywhere?

BuddyBigsby
03-28-2008, 12:30 AM
I ask because I might be going to QUT for basically all of 09.

I seriously ****ing hate spiders. I think I'll need a frontal lobotomy if I come across one of those facehugger looking mother****ers.

Any beach is going to be cleaner than SoCal, and living's going to be cheaper too so I guess those aren't big deals. Is the Great Barrier Reef off of the Gold Coast/Brisbane though? I used to be pretty big into scuba diving and I may reinvest in it if so.

br3ad_man

I go to QUT.

Tbh I don't come across them all that often but Australia apparently has the most poisonous spiders out of anywhere or something.

I remember being shocked by the beach in LA when I first visited there at the age of 8.

Is the Great Barrier Reef off of the Gold Coast/Brisbane though?

Nah, it's further north, near Mackay. It's amazing though so definitely go at some point if you end up coming.

BuddyBigsby
03-28-2008, 12:40 AM

Concubine
03-28-2008, 12:44 AM
yeah, heaps of spiders here

Public transportations gets a bit gay at night especially on weekdays since most of them stop running at like 11-12 pm. You can always take a cab but theyre pretty expensive

I really really like it, the campus is nice and all of my lecturers/tutors are cool. It's like 5 minutes out of the city so it's really easy to get to. I'm doing creative industries degree, majoring in journalism, which that I have a bunch of subjects about getting jobs and making contacts and then a major (journalism), a minor (film studies) and a few electives here and there.

QUT is great, don't let any UQ fags tell you otherwise.

this is in sydney, everytime I go to work I need to pass this bush for about 10 minutes and basically if you look around there are spiders everywhere as big as your palm. I need to duck everytime for the spider web that massively went across the road

i went to the dc zoo yesterday and they have this exhibit at the end of this one house where there was like all these spider webs and these like pretty big, poisonous looking spiders on the webs and i noticed that everyone going up to the exhibit and freaking out. There was no glass in front of the exhibit so you could just like touch the spider webs and the spiders could have easily jumped down and ****. Pretty neat.

Yeah, Australia has like 9 of the 10 most venomous creatures or snakes or spiders in the world. Something crazy. I also read about this venomous fish that looks like a rock. If you step on it, its venom is so potent or whatever that unless you get immediate treatment they need to amputate your leg before it spreads.

Sounds like a stonefish. I'm pretty sure you don't need to get it amputated (although I think you need to if you get stung by a box jellyfish...my first aid is a bit rusty), but my first aid instructor a few months ago said that one guy who did the course one time stepped on a stonefish and the pain was so bad that he was screaming and asking for his foot to be amputated.

I also have never seen a platypus in the wild, but I have at the zoo and the wildlife sanctuary. No doubt they are one of the most bitchin animals ever.

I've never seen a koala in the wild, nor a platypus. Though a platypus would be very hard to find, living in the water and all. They're really cool still, and poisonous surprisingly.

We get a fair few funnel webs in Sydney, and they are very aggressive, but I can't recall hearing of anyone who's died from one. They just hide out in the garage or whatever and you just leave them alone.

Btw - we were horrible at the Quebec show, i can't stand playing the Troub - that's gotta be our last show there hehe
