View Full Version : Venting On Emo

Alright, so I’ve got to vent, and I don’t have my webcam hooked up for YouTube, so this is it. If you feel like talkin’ ****, go for it. It’s not like that is unexpected or anything.

I was cruising YouTube the other day, and I came across all of these videos about emo kids. I went ahead and skipped through the joke ones, as I’ve already watched them. Don’t get me wrong, I laugh every time. I can’t help but laugh whenever I see someone following all of the scene stereotypes. Not my fault, either. Instead, I watched a couple of videos of both people bitching about "emo kids" and "scene kids." And I guess that kind of **** pisses me off. I don’t know how to get this in writing, but I’ll try. If it’s out of order, forgive me.

None of those mother ****ers were emo. Because of them, in fact, I hate even saying the word. Emo in itself now sounds like a scene term. But I’m going to use it, because I don’t feel like spelling it out completely this late at night. Anyway, emo is not what I saw in any of those videos. Underoath, for Christ’s sake, is metalcore. As for Fallout Boy, My Chemical Romance, and Panic at the Disco, I don’t quite know what to call it but some new form of pop-punk or dance-rock that hasn’t been listed yet, since everyone is so busy calling it emo.

This thread is mainly for me to explain what emo is, to me, and see if someone agrees with me. You probably won’t but I’ll get to that later. I’m also wanting to explain what I think is the problem with the music these days.

I saw a video about this same thing, defining what emo is, and I felt that it couldn’t be more off topic, really. In the video, the guy didn’t list a single band that he thought was emo. Instead, he showed a bunch of characteristics of emo bands. For instance, he showed what an emo show is, compared to what an emo show is not. I agree that if you watch emo shows live or on video, the guy does have a good point. In an emo show, there is rarely a stage. It’s sort of wierd, actually, but everyone is just standing around the band on the floor. They are really close, too. I don’t think that I would enjoy playing at one of those shows, it’s so close. But that doesn’t make it emo. Saying that kind of stuff makes it exactly what the guy was talking **** about, and that is a scene. Talking about the look of anything when defining music is what makes a scene a scene. Emo is nothing more than what metal, punk rock, and rock and roll is, and that is music. Emo is music. It isn’t a look. It is a sound, and a feeling.

What’s funny is that most of the people that talk **** about emo don’t realize that they’re talking **** about a type of music. Another thing is that the guy talking **** about emo scene kids is doing so while having some big-*** mohawk or liberty-spike hair style. They talk **** about exactly what they are becoming, and that is a scene. It is just music. Music isn’t about being underground or popular. It is just music. So anyone that talks **** about bands that are popular has already lost any hope of winning the argument.

So what is emo, then? Am I about to criticize everyone else without even so much as correcting the problem? Not exactly. Unfortunately, you can’t just define emo. However, you can wrongly define it, which is what I feel is happening. Emo is, in itself, pretty amazing, in that it has evolved so much, yet you can always tell what it is when you put it on. It is emotional. It is, for the most part, all about, in my opinion, letting your feelings out, and not giving a **** about how beautiful it sounds. But in the process, it sounds so beautiful. It’s like poetry, really. Check out Saetia, Hot Cross, Drive Like Jehu, and Rites of Spring, among others. To me, those are probably the best bands to use when talking about this type of pe of music, and how it has evolved from the barely-not-punk, like Rites of Spring and Grey Matter, to the ugly, like Saetia, to the technical and beautiful, like Hot Cross, to music like Sunny Day Real Estate, which is, to me, the furthest it got. But if you get to Dashboard Confessional, you’ve gone too far. I think that when I listen to Dashboard, I hear the end of emo. I think that is the point where emo disappears.

But it isn’t gone completely. There are plenty of bands out there that stick to the good stuff. Bands like City of Caterpillar still do it. It’s amazing, really, how they can hold on. For more stuff like that, I recommend checking out Level Plane Records. That’s probably the greatest label I’ve ever listened to, as well.

I don’t think it is the fans’ fault that so many bands are wrongfully labeled, though. I think that the only thing that we can blame is the evolution of music having gotten so far that there are too many types of music out there. They overlap each other now, and this causes confusion. Ask someone how they classify a particular band, and they could give you one answer, and someone else could give you another one. What one person calls emo, another calls post-hardcore. It just sucks that we’ve chosen now, as bands like Hawthorne Heights are coming out, to stop coming up with new genres, as I said before. We just call them emo, and go with it.

To finish off this rant, I figured I’d make just one last point. With the exception of Senses Fail, when you check out these new bands’ inspirations, they are not inspired by bands that are even emo. When you look at real emo bands’ inspirations, the proof is there. They are inspired by bands like Saetia and Sunny Day.

In conclusion, as I said before, you cannot totally define emo. I can tell you that I know it when I hear it, but I cannot tell you what it is. However, you can wrongly define it, and I think that most people I hear on the Internet have done so.

If you do decide to check out some emo, really take some time to listen to it. It is an aquired taste. With me, I hated it at first. I hated the first songs I heard. But after a little while, it just sucked me in, and I am stuck with it now. I am always craving a little bit more of it. It’s hard to explain it, though. You just have to check it out for yourself, and give it a chance. But like every other kind of music, it isn’t for everyone.

I totally agree there... but what I hate most is when people use the term *emo* negitavely when concerning music. I always (when I can be bothered) say to them, Dude, its another genre of music, get over yourself...

the thing is, its a trend. It comes and hopefully it will go - I just can't stand so called emo's who just whine about how everything in their lives is bad or wrong, even when they have pretty cushy lives and get on just fine. The whole fashion and image associations are so lame too - but thats thanks to the rising trend of bands like Bring Me the Horizon who convey a sense of "cool" by wearing jeans so tight they could make some infertile and weaken erectile function...so sad.

Alright, so I’ve got to vent, and I don’t have my webcam hooked up for YouTube, so this is it. If you feel like talkin’ ****, go for it. It’s not like that is unexpected or anything.

Just read Everybody Hurts: An Essential Guide To Emo Culture by Leslie Simon and Trevor Kelley. That's everything you'll need to know and more than you'll need to know as well about emo.

Is that found in the same series as Everybody Poops and Nobody Actually Gives a Rusty F'uck?
