first off, awesome band!

secondly check out these if you haven't, you might like them

ghost mice
fake problems
defiance, ohio
mischief brew
this bike is a pipe bomb

the anarchist folk punk reminds me of world/inferno, but a lot of its more raw than them.

oh and check out nanuchka, a little different but it has the old bassist of world/inferno

The Dresden Dolls

I don't like them but they sound like world inferno. They have that las-vegas lounge act sound.

Pete-o, check out Guignol. They're instrumental and cool.

And Nanunchka, and Andrew Jackson Jihad. You'd like them I think.

Guignol is a bit too klezmer for some people. I like them.

For something completely different to what everyone else is reccomending, I say Estradasphere. You wont get the intense vocals, but you will get some excellent instrumentation and mix of genres.

Or some Jethro Tull (srsly)

Thanks, a couple bands..! Isn't Jethro Tull a weirdo? Aqualung?

Yeah, but I've been getting into them recently. I don't know if you'll agree, because I tend to make band comparisons that only make sense to me.

The song Queen and Country made me think of it, which is from warchild.

Wait I don't really like either band and neither of them sound similar

Fake Problems is definitely not a dirty folk punk band.

Don't worry. She is just a bitter elitist.

The day I recognize Jessica as an elitist is the day I value her as a human being.

Actually, I thought of something better than what I suggested before. Since it didn't exist online until I bought it, and is very hard to find, I just megauploaded it for you if you or anyone else is interested.

It's Giant Ant Farm - Fortune. The album is 1994 but it sounds more recent than that. For fans of World Inferno, Gogol Bordello and Tom Waits.

Yeah, these dudes, Kevin and Gabe, who actually are a dirty folk punk band, were telling me and my friend about Fake Problems because they're from the same area and they played at/stayed over my friend's house a couple times. Apparently Fake Problems live in a really big house with a pool and stuff.

you will probably enjoy devotchka

indie rock with eastern european + gypsy music influences

Yeah, devotchka is good.

And I really hope someone downloads that Giant Ant Farm I uploaded. It's totally worthwhile.

pedro durruti

I will but I won't have my computer for a few more days. Devotchka is awesome, and so are a lot of the nonpunk gypsy bands coming out these days, like Beirut and Fishtank Ensemble.

yeah Beirut's good. I hear he totally rips off a lot of traditional gypsy music though.. if that's the case I'd most definitely like to listen to the music he rips off more than his "own".

pedro durruti

What do you mean he rips it off?

The singer is annoying, but the music is okay. Not that great though, sorry.

While you guys are talking about shitty gypsy music I'll add that I saw Gogol Bordello on World CNN this past week.

What do you mean he rips it off?

Some people say Beirut rips off Yann Tiersen, the French composer who did Amelie.. There are some similarities in their music but I don't see anything thats glaringly similar. People fight about this tooth and nail on Youtube.

Whoever hasn't heard him should give him a listen (especially La Valse d'Amlie)

EDIT:

If you want to find traditional gypsy music, Rough Guide: Music of the Gypsies is a good place to start.

If you're just looking for some weird/eclectic rock, Tom Waits is a good place to start. Listen to Gods Away On Business and Temptation. He does everything from vaudeville to blues to proto-punk style songs...

Modest Mouse can get really funky too if you haven't already listened to much of them. Jesus Christ Was an Only Child, The Devil's Workday, and Fly Trapped in a Jar are all f'in weird, and awesome songs.

Theres also the cabaret soundtrack with Liza Minelli, which is closer to the World/Inferno sound than most people would probably like to admit. Most people only pay attention to their gypsy/folk sound but they definitely have a cabaret thing going on (which is why I compared them to Dresden Dolls...)

edit: I have to add "Singapore" and "Cemetery Polka" to the list of Tom Waits songs XD
