Just as the title says. I'd like some advice on creating a template for routing pickups, and any advice on keeping it square and ahering it to the body.
Thanks.
Take the pickup and mark the outline with pencil onto a piece of scrap wood that is a decent length (for clamping purposes and having enough space to work with router)
Once you have the marking, use another scrap piece of wood that has a straight edge to it.
Place this on the lines previously marked out (actually about 1mm of so away), then using a router with a router bit that has a guide bearing at the top, plunge into the wood and route along the edge, you will obviously need to be careful not to go beyond the markings.
The unclamp, the straight endge and repeat all the way around.
From there you will have gotten the bulk of the wood out. Now use a set square as your guide rail (did not use it before as you would have had too much wood to route out for the thickness of the set square).
Now you can run the router into the "corners" of the pickup cavity, use a smaller router bit with a bearing to get closer in.
Once you repeat this all the way round, you should have a decent pickup template.
Trick is to take it very very slowly, as this will be the exact shape you route into the bass, so accuracy is a must.
Or the other thing to do is head over to www.bestbassgear.com and see what they have on offer in terms of templates, much quicker and less time consuming.

BestBassGear has the template I need, so I'll just be ordering that. Can't wait to sell off my crap so I can get started on this.
Only worry now is getting threaded inserts for the Status neck I'll be putting in.
