I don't know much about recording. I mean, I can and have recorded some songs and have been satisfied with the results, but honestly I know nothing about how to mix it or whatever. I just record the instruments, then I almost randomly turn equalizer knobs, etc.
Could I get a pretty decent recording if I used some good mics/amps to just record all the instruments, without messing with their sounds, and then get someone to mix them for me?
Actually, now that I think about it, I think people on this board have offered to do that. Can I get a good sound this way?

You can do that, and you might get really good results.
Here's an idea: why not have a contest?
Post the tracks you record online somewhere in raw, uncompressed format (preferably WAV, 24-bit, 44.1 kHz to optimize quality/compatibility). Then everyone here that wants to can download and take a shot it. Then you keep the one you like best.

If I had gear at home I'd do it. Sadly I'm not there yet. Workin' on getting a set up though. Getting some mics sometime in the next few weeks.

Yeah I got a rig at home. I could do this, but I'm starting on a pretty big project pretty soon.

Cool, I'm going to do that then. But first I have to finish writing the song and who knows how long more that will take me (my songs are usually around 10 minutes and I'm a perfectionist).
