you can call it double bass, upright, standup, string bass.. there's more names for it too. Depends on the context

Like I said before, have an old one you need to unload?

UIAC: Spruce top, Maple back and sides, fully carved. $2900 CAD with a bag and a nice bow. A steal!
Akira: My old one was a rental. And trust me, you wouldn't have wanted it anyways, it was a plywood piece of junk. The sound was so dead and it didn't play very well.

I want to learn. Renting an upright and getting lessons would be so expensive though.
blacklungfever
02-06-2008, 04:49 PM
I was paying about 70 a month for the rental, and I'm paying about 40 bucks for a one hour lesson. Yeah it does get expensive (thats about 230 bucks a month total!) But for me its worth it, since I want to go to school for jazz upright bass next year.

Fully carved for under 3000, that is a steal. What kind is it if you don't mind my asking? Also... clips or it doesn't exist...

Under $3,000 is a steal indefinitely. Very nice... but...

It's an Eastman 305. Made in China, but carved is carved.
If you can fold back the front seat, you can fit it in almost any car.

I have always wanted to learn upright.
What do you guys think about this?:

It's probably nothing like an acoustic, but do you think it's a good starter bass?

No, because it's nothing like a real upright. It's really more like an upright fretless.

Different feel, different tone. Get a real one or don't bother, imo
Akira

A Dean Pace is just an electric that you play upright. I don't think it even has a bowable radius. Don't waste you money.

ye
Electrics are portable and easier for recording, that's about all I like about them. I've seen EUB's that cost as much as a cheap-ish upright. I'd go for the acoustic.

NS makes some cool electric uprights, but they are actually designed like uprights.
But they still pretty much sound like fat electrics.

well seeing how the timbre of an upright is basically the only thing I like about it (besides the fact that you can slide through microtones), I'd still go for an acoustic. It would cost about the same anyway

They are better, and I like them, but they still don't get that sexy woody upright tone.
It would be a decent stepping stone though, assuming you don't want to just rent a real upright.

Yeah, agreed.
It wouldn't necessarily be a bad choice but I'd still try an acoustic as well. Nothing compares to the real thing, imo

the Yamaha Silent Basses are awesome too. If you want an electric upright I'd get one of those.
I agree with Matt though, you can't compare to a nice acoustic.

Be warned that a rather large amount of those Ned Steinberger basses have extreme truss rod issues, which they are trying to get corrected, but until then, most will have defects.
If you buy one, be sure you try it out and have it looked at by a stores technician before buying it.
I will also agree with blacklungfever, Yamaha's Silents are pretty sweet.

Nice wee toy there, would love to have enough money to blow on a good double bass but money and space issues mean it's a no no for me at the moment. But hey, once I win the lottery and become a millionare I'll buy a half decent one lol.

i could not possibly disagree more. those instruments sound like wet poo. played their gear for years, through many different setups and couldn't get a decent tone to save my life.
