Well i got my 6 string just over a month ago and tonight I decided I would take the strings off so I could give it a clean. Well I cleaned the bass and went to put the strings back on and they were rattling horribly against the frets. Ive already broken my C string which has annoyed me and I dont want to risk breaking anymore. Now has anyone got any ideas why my strings would start rattling against the frets cause I have no idea why they are and how would I go about fixing the problem?

Sounds like you left the strings off too long and your neck developed a backbow

If they are rattling on the frets, they are obviously too close to the frets.
Does it happen all over the neck, or just on the first five or so frets?

well it seems that anything from the 8th fret to the 24th fret is fine and anything below that rattles

definitely backbowed. Don't leave your strings off for so long.

So how would I solve the problem?

Loosen the truss rod
with the strings facing away from you, turn it to the left

That's not the problem unless you left them off for weeks. Did you say your C string is broken? Did you replace it? If you're missing a string then that's why the action is off.

You definitely need to set up the truss rod. I just recently learnt how to set up a bass myself. This is a great guide: http://garywillis.com/pages/bass/bassmanual/setupmanual.html
