View Full Version : MODERN METAL MUSIC SUCKS! (A Challenge)

El_Goodo
02-04-2008, 04:00 PM
Well hopefully that title attracts people. I am issuing a challenge to you modern metal fans to find me a modern metal band that I can actually like.

The Metal I am into is:
1.) Black Sabbath
2.) Megadeth
3.) Iron Maiden
4.) Dio/Rainbow
5.) Metallica
6.) Pantera

My problem with most "in" metal bands these days is that none of them can sing. They seem to believe that unless you've got the growly incoherent cookie monster vocals your not heavy. Ozzy and Dio could portray more emotions than just anger...and they could scare you without resorting to jack-assery.

And also the groove, emotion, and feel has all been abandoned for SPEED SPEED SPEED! With a side of SPEED! I have a feeling that none of the modern metal guitarists could play the song Black Sabbath at regular tempo without dying inside.

And I long for the day when I hear a bit of groove in the riffs like I do in Killing Yourself To Live, and Children Of The Grave by Sabbath.

Another thing I like about those bands is that they've heard of this thing called melody. They don't write out sloppy angst lyrics and then just yell them out...they actually created catchy melodies...again with Children Of The Grave the melody works with the music to create that marching from the grave atmosphere it's great! And Iron Maiden are especially good at creating memorable hooks (Prisoner, Run To The Hills).

Please don't recommend anything with lame scream vocals. Whoever can name a band that I end up liking will get a cookie...and I shall forever be in their debt.

Pretty sure these bands are still going, and fairly decent, Maiden being (in my opinion) better than ever.

Yeah most modern metal has mostly screamed vocals, other than power metal and some prog stuff. Maybe you should try some Opeth, maybe that one album with no screaming, its Damnation or Deliverance, I get them mixed up.

I found this paragraph particularly hilarious. Do you even know what melody means?

Anyway, since Judas Priest wasn't on your list you definitely should check them out. And stop listening to Pantera while you're at it.Maybe you should try some Opeth, maybe that one album with no screaming, its Damnation or Deliverance, I get them mixed up.It's Damnation, but that album isn't metal, it's more along the lines of acoustic rock...

But maybe the OP should check out Opeth, then maybe he'd change his mind about harsh vocals.

@OP check out

I've half listened to Iced Earth a few times...currently checking out Dracula. It Certainly fits the musical style I like well. But his voice isn't the best...

Metallica...I've heard

You Sir Are A Fag, by GTFO I was not a fan of.

Now Listening to Edguy - All The Clowns. Hmm....this I could listen to...the singer sounds identical to Bruce Dickinson...sounded like Megadeth's music with a Iron Maiden vocals...I think I might look into these guys.

Hammerfall's a little to cheesy for me...but not too bad...can definitely hear the Dio influence.

Running Wild also not bad sounds a lot like Dio's solo stuff. The problem with the last two is they sound like a knock-off of the stuff.

I've heard Judas Priest their pretty good too.

And when I talk about melody I'm usually referring to the vocal melody which most bands totally ignore...you have to understand my favorite music is 60's Pop Music...The Beatles, The Kinks, The Stones.

I just meant the vocals seemed to be drowning in the sound. Maybe that's the appeal of their sound? It does create a darker atmosphere.

Although there was more than a trace of irony in lifting up the names of Metallica and Pantera while knocking death metal bands like Kataklysm and Amon Amarth (which are both very technically skilled bands), I feel that you'd like a lot of today's power metal. I recommend bands such as Rhapsody of Fire, Iced Earth, Wizard, Luca Turilli, Dragonland, Rata Blanca and Lost Horizon among a good many others.

I've half listened to Iced Earth a few times...currently checking out Dracula. It Certainly fits the musical style I like well. But his voice isn't the best...

Try songs off The Glorious Burden or Framing Armaggedon (they've got a different and imo better singer for those 2 albums).
You could maybe try 3 Inches Of Blood but I wouldn't put that at the top of your list. Try an australian band called LORD (formerly known as Dungeon - worth checking their seperate stuff out too)
Winters Bane and Beyond Fear are 2 bands with Iced Earth's other sing that would be worth a look at, especially if you do like Judas Priest.
Surprised I haven't seen anyone mentioned Dream Theater or Symphony X (my apologies if you have).

And just for kicks, Manowar

I was going to mention Firewind but he said something about generic power metal that made me change my mind.

Just remembered another decent band that fits what the thread starter dude is after

Am I the only one here that really can't stand Manowar for some reason?
