Ive got an Ibanez SRX500 and ive recently noticed that on both the pickups they have started gather rust. Now im not really sure on how to get rid of this safely so could anyone recommend on how I should do it?

i'll try to get some pictures if people want

I'm not sure how to get it off, but I've heard of people applying clear nail polish to the pole pieces to prevent it in the future

Some people suggest steelwool, but that can leave little bits of steel stuck to the magnet so i'd go against that. sure i saw a topic on this recently on basschat...

I'd also check out the setup and repair forum at talkbass.

I took some silver polish, a rag and went to town on my pick ups. Took a lot of time though. They're not entirely clean but I didn't want that.

I did attack them with some steel wool first though. It does work but as mentioned, little pieces of the steel chip off and end up stuck on the pick ups. To limit this, duct tape all the poles that aren't being cleaned and keep wiping the pole you are cleaning with a rough sponge or something(make sure it's dry).

Good luck!

Navel Jelly. Available at most any auto parts store. Works Great. But try to keep it off of plastic parts, it can dull the finish of some plastics.

Steel wool is the thing. You can try Vasoline as well. Sometimes Vasoline will dissolve the rust.

Don't leave your instruments near a window. I learned a hard way.

as long as its not too much its not that bad. My guitar has had rust for over 5-6 years and according to my guitar tech its not really needed to clean it up but if i wanted to he suggested to polish them up like others suggested. But for know, i don't care

If it ain't broken don't fix it is a good motto to live by.

It's just alittle MOJO if you ask me.

Well, to me its more like "not enough money to get it done by tech, too clumsy to do it myself"

the rust doesn't really make a difference to the pup tone itself. i had rust on my old ibanez gsr 190 and it didn't affect the tone or anything.
