I got this exercise from watching and interview with Ronald Bruner jr, he didn't explain it at all so this is how I practice it:)
I find flam taps a pretty good chops builder and this helps develp both flams and single stroke rolls further.
Basically you play flam taps and then omit a flam tap and play the 16th notes with one hand, it takes 2 bars to repeat because the second bar will be left hand lead.
lR=Right Flam
rL=Left Flam
R=Right Hand
L=Left Hand
Flam Tap
lR R rL L - lR R rL L - lR R rL L - lR R rL L
ex. 1
| lR R rL L - lR R rL L - lR R rL L - lR R R R | rL L lR R - rL L lR R - rL L lR R - rL L L L |
ex. 2
| lR R rL L - lR R rL L - lR R R R - R R R R | rL L lR R - rL L lR R - rL L L L - L L L L |
ex. 3
| lR R rL L - lR R R R - R R R R - R R R R | rL L lR R - rL L L L - L L L L - L L L L |
Thats it, you know the usual, start slow and build your way up. Play at different stroke heights and try to keep and consistent sound.
You can also orchestrate between right hand and right foot and left hand, foot etc.
And also play it on the kit.
Go try it!
