So yeah. I bought myself a nice old 60s Blue Sparkle 5x14" Pearl Snare.
It needs a bit of touching up, but the tone is sooo nice and warm.
See below.

Now, for a prize, guess how much I paid for it in australian dollars.

It's like...
Have you seen that youtube vid of stanton moore playing a panderio-based groove? It's that type of tone, but in a snare so shorter in sound and "snare" sounding. Really warm and deep and just... if it was an amp it'd have valves, haha.
$100 = no dice.

I'll go with 50 ... because something tells me you paid an absurdly low amount...
Edit: To Ozzy, the Yamaha Akira Jimbo snare is 6 lugs, .. and its $515 dollars. And it's the nicest sounding snare I've ever played.

To those talking down about six lug snares - you must not have played very many of them. I have a great late 60s Ludwig snare; 6 lugs.
Looks like a nice buy, blue sparkle looks great. I'm not familiar with vintage Pearl gear, but it sure does look nice.

Yeah, because the amount of lugs always effects the quality of the sound of a drum .

You know it! It's great sounding. I guess you and I are better tuners then others.

the difference between six lugs and eight and ten lugs is a matter of the variety of tensions. your counterhoop does not apply tension evenly. if any of you have a Drum Dial or similar, you can test this yourself -- measure the tension at a lug, and then at the point between the two lugs.
the point directly at the lug will be the most tight (read: highest pitch). the point between the two lugs will be the lowest pitch.
Now, when you increase that variation (less lugs, softer counterhoops) you get a greater "range" of dominant frequencies. Most people translate this into "warm" or "dark" sounds. The opposite, more lugs and harder counterhoops (DC's) make much less variation, making the top head closer to 1 dominant frequency. Most people translate this into "focused" or "dry" sounds.
my ew comment comes from the fact that it's an old pearl, meaning it's really obscure cheap plywood with subpar hardware parts. The epitome of bad Asian drums. Just because it's vintage, doesn't mean it's good :thumb:

For me, and probably most people, however chippy, musical instruments are designed to make sounds; if it's sounds good, it's a good drum. Thanks for taking the time to give a nice justified response, rather than some, I appreciate your point of view but I take it in the simplistic frame of mind; if it can achieve the sound you're after, and keep that tuning for longer than one session, it's a good snare.

no problem. "vintage" to me is a nice old rogers dynasonic... those are gorgeous vintage drums.

Yeah, because the amount of lugs always effects the quality of the sound of a drum .
 And you are also so naive? Lug number is always a good indication of quality, make and model. Don't be so naive as to read the plainness of the statement.
From looking at the pictures AND the number of lugs, one can tell easily it's a basic, bottom of the line snare from X time period.
Granted there are some very rare modern snares with 6 lugs, but on a whole, 6 lugs is pretty much great odd's it's a low line snare.
Granted as well some crappy snares with 6 lugs can be tuned well and happen to have a decent sound. This is by far the exception to the rule.

^^ overuse of the word 'Naive' IMO.
Also; your whole argument contradicted itself. See: "Lug number is always a good indication of quality" and "but on a whole, 6 lugs is pretty much great odd's it's a low line snare." then "Granted as well some crappy snares with 6 lugs can be tuned well and happen to have a decent sound."

..and here's me thinking drums were made to produce sound, not look good? hmm.
Thanks for all the positive comments guys, i'm going to get some audio up [finally OMG] of me playing in the next month or so, and will use this snare for some of it.

That's not a contradiction at all...low-quality things can still sound "decent", in his words. My pearl forum, for example, is pretty low quality, but with some time spent tuning, they sound pretty decent.
That's a pretty straight-forward statement, he never said that low-quality and poor sound are mutually exclusive.

Yeah,me too.
Crazy...
I want a shallower wood snare.
My Catalina Maple one is nice, but 6 is an inch deeper than what I really want.

Okay, the phrases I selected of his didn't blatantly contradict each other. But, he wasn't really saying anything, he conveyed a thought process most people would've not written down. My point is that he didn't actually say anything, and that his idea contradicted his calling Aaron naive, as he pretty much justified what Aaron said.

I was the same, before this my main snare was 10" deep.
