TMV is obviously progressive rock. CO&CA is alternative or progressive or whatever.

I guess I call them progressive because of their song structures (not the singles, a lot of the other songs on the albums).

There is a fine line between pretentious douche-baggery and prog. TMV is the perfect example of this.
You want real prog? Listen to Floyd and work your way to more obscure bands.

a lot of people forget about bands like Eloy, Gentle Giant, Amon Duul II, and some others because of the success of Pink Floyd, Rush, Yes, Genesis, and King Crimson. heres some albums of theirs that are worth checking out..

Have you guys heard Lucifer's Friend?
http://www.myspace.com/xlucifersfriendx
Good German band.
I've got their s/t if anyone wants it:
This is the first album by heavy metal/progressive rock band Lucifer's Friend, released in 1970. There are many Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin influences heard throughout this album, most notably the dark lyrics heard on many songs, especially the song "Lucifer's Friend." There is a little controversy that "Ride The Sky" is a rip off of the "Immigrant Song" by Led Zeppelin, but this is not true due to the fact that "Ride The Sky" was written before Robert Plant wrote "Immigrant Song." There are also some very striking similarities between this album and Black Sabbath's debut because both are the first and self-titled albums by both bands, both are full fledge heavy metal, and both have a self-titled song, and both have arguable anti-christ band names.

I have no patience for the sort of 70s cheese bands like that give off.
SugarCoatedSour
03-27-2008, 12:53 PM
Ya, certain bands certainly love their cheese. Like when prog was commonly known as noodley and modal that's when it hit the fan. The only band in memory that actually pulled that style off was Gentle Giant and only for so long, but regardless they had a consistent amount of good material in the early 70's.
Ash Ra Tempel, now there's a good 70s progressive band.
SugarCoatedSour

J'adore Oceansize. I picked up the Music for Nurses EP the other day, it's sick.
An incredible live band too.

I'm missing that one, sadly.
Effloresce is the only album of theirs I listen to but I love it.

For me, its always going to be Pink Floyd, Pain of Salvation (awesome live, Gildenlow has some skills) and Porcupine Tree.

Soft Machine 3rd and 4th, straddles between jazz-rock and progressive rock. Turns out to be some primo stuff.

never could really get into soft machine. I listened to the third the other day and really was not that impressed. Im sure my opinion will change soon. However I listened to Van Der Graaf Generator and was blown away. Has alot of Jazz influence also.

The Flower Kings are great, select Spock's Beard albums too.

now that i know what prog rock really is, i must say i'm not a fan/ just because music is complex doesn't make it a great listening experience

Nobody mentioned Marillion!? Misplaced Childhood is probably one of the best Prog. Rock albums I've ever listened to. I don't like their albums with Hogarth very much tbh. But if you haven't please do listen to: Misplaced Childhood and Clutching at Straws.

I've been getting into Noekk. It's two guys from Empyrium. The Minstrel's Curse is good. It's like Agalloch but more proggy.
