That is a respectable avenue to take, but you have to remember an act as big as Thrice needs money to keep the project rolling. I don't think you guys understand how important making money is to a successful live and studio act. With a project as musically complex as Thrice, the money NEEDS to be coming from somewhere.
I am done with you now  <3

I would play what I want and trust the world to listen to it. I wouldn't change my sound for anyone. I love money but I love music more. The way it should be.

I realize your position and I completely agree in the abstract. Realistically, though? You need a steady cash flow to maintain your musical project.

I've done Raayl live a few times, and it was stupidly expensive. My music is complex when it leaves the studio, because alot of my sound is stylized recording techniques.

Most bands experience similar difficulties. Maintain a road crew, touring with no steady job, you NEED to rely on your fan base to supply you with the cash to entertain. There is no way around it.

Understanding In a Crash

there are more options than that, though. like playing your music the way you want and people enjoying it. just a thought. it does happen with some bands.

It happens with alot of bands. The words popularity and greed are getting mixed up with each other.

Jody = Greedy

Thrice = Popular/A Complex musical masterpiece

I didn't mean it how you're interpreting it, I meant complex as in the entirety of their show and live and studio act. Think about all that goes into preparing a show for a band like Thrice. Think about all the people that need to be paid.

The road crew
The bus driver
The lighting expert
The sound engineer
The venue itself
The producer
The manager
The investors
The studio

The list is endless.

Have you ever been in a local band before playing at bars and what not? That just isn't true. If that was true then I wouldn't of quit my band to go to college and be working in retail right now...

i thought we were talking about established bands like radiohead that sell out festivals.

Yeah, its very important to keep in mind the disconnect between professional musicians and local musicians. The type of acts I'm talking about are the big names that have been mentioned-the acts that require a massive amount of fiscal and monetary support.

I don't know, I used to share that perception but I'm changing now. In the past 2 months I've had over 10,000 plays and I've moved to a city in which I've had relentless offers to do projects and shows and activities with artists that I never dreamed I'd be able to work with.

Being popular and having your music be "respected" is one of the best feelings you can ever experience, and trust me-that feeling is one you WANT to sustain regardless of how your music changes. If you work hard and experience it, you'll understand.

Rather than labeling music purely as expression, Sade, you can also look at as communcation.

"Selling out" to me is like reluctantly listening to what someone has to say, and then actually learning something and having much bigger ears from there on out. Do you turn your back to anyone you think may not talk exactly like what you feel like listening to? If not, then why would you turn a project or musical idea down because it doesn't sound like what's spinning in your cd player?

and i know it's hypothetical. i'm just saying that there are bands out there with creative control that are successful. it doesn't have to be sellout or homeless.

Well yeah, exactly.

I post my stuff on here because through all the flaming I get, through all the people that cut it up, there is always a majority that feels it relevant enough to suggest how I should alter it. People will always ask you to change things, nobody will ever tell you that you've made a perfect song.

In turn you must always keep an open line of communication with your fans, and deliver to them what they want. It shows you are both an open person who respects your fans, and in turn you will gain popularity and thus validate yourself ever the more.

The best example I can say is that homeless guy at the subway station playing whatever instrument and as long as he's playing it good people will still put money in his case. I've seen it happen. If you play what you care about well enough then people will find out on it's own terms and like it.

Do you play live with a DJ?

I've thought about it, but no. Back in the Blood of Rome days, I don't know if you're even familiar with that-I had some people interested in helping me pull it off live. It was more or less an experiment, but I was lacking musicians that were really "on track" with what I was doing.

It was about a year and a half ago, too.

I've been looking for people to help me perform this new stuff (siphon spine, crisis) in chicago. Been in contact with some industrial labels in chicago, we'll see if it plays out.

well 7 string has negatives too

+ weight
Bigger neck, not all notes can be easily accessed.
harder to find parts if something goes wrong(i.e bridge or pick ups)

plus i wouldn't want to say I'm a seven string bass players, It just sounds and looks like your trying to be better than everybody else.

The only negative thing about 7 strings imo is that there is no way to look cool playing one, especially if you are a weenie with a small frame like hell on wheels, and the weight and bulk of them really hinder your movement. It'd be sweet to track bebop solos with those suckers though, it's really easy to burn through stuff without needing to change position.

Neck size isn't really an issue for me. Thickness yes, but not height-wise. I don't think I'd have any trouble reaching the lower register of a 7 string.

Freaking long process, even more so with a slow internet connection. Should take about 3 more hours total, I had to reset everything to the original ipod touch software version 1.1.1, then start with the hacking and updating each to each new software version. 1.1.3 is the long one, good thing I found an automated hack for it, still takes a few hours.

Then we're square on this issue, b/c we are both apparently are making accusations. The only thing I ever hear you say is "hey everyone, listen to my shitty band," and all I apparently say is "it sucks." You're welcome to look through my posts and see how often I say that; you'd probably be surprised at how wrong you are, but everyone sees what they want to see.

The only time I say "it sucks" is when people whore their shitty music. Make a thread about it, I probably wont listen to it and won't comment. Come in here and keep saying "listen to my crap, listen to my crap!" I'll go listen to it and tell you if it sucks. I'm not going to go and try to write out well-thought critiques (I save those for Garageband they might actually have some impact) because no one on here actually cares about the critiques people give. They won't actually take any of it into consideration, they'll just keep writing the same shitty music and just keep looking for the few compliments they'll recieve from the same people each time.

And I'm pretty sure I would have replied to you had you said you liked it. I probably would have had a series of follow-up questions. Just like I reply to most who say something about my music.

The point was that "You guys are good," is just as useless of a comment as, "It sucks." Why wouldn't you do follow up questions to find out why someone didn't like your music? Because you, like majority of the people who post music on here, just want to fish for compliments. Go ahead and deny it, but you basically already proved it.

Come in here and keep saying "listen to my crap, listen to my crap!" I'll go listen to it and tell you if it sucks. I'm not going to go and try to write out well-thought critiques (I save those for Garageband they might actually have some impact) because no one on here actually cares about the critiques people give. They won't actually take any of it into consideration, they'll just keep writing the same poopty music and just keep looking for the few compliments they'll recieve from the same people each time.

I post my music here because there are a handful of people that I openly respect and look forward to hearing their critiques for each song I post. If it were possible I'd work with them in the studio before I even post songs. Ben, EADGC, Naut, etc.

I also take all critiques I feel valid into consideration. You can hear it from track to track.

Keep in mind, big guy, that this is a forum based around being a musician, not a listener. You never post anything you've done musically, and you never say anything worth reading regarding other people's music. Even I give honest critique when I feel the artist worth it. So watch where you're stepping with this argument.

Remember that one time we were talking on AIM, and you were like "Dude, I gotta go to a bar with some friends my own age."

I think we both felt a little creeped out by that.

Again, this is reference to the people who feel the need to whore their music up and down the forum. You make a thread, and maybe put a post in the casual (if that). So you're kind of an exception.

You're also, basically, the only person who has composed band-like (i really can't pick a good work for this, but I'm trying to think of one) music that I actually enjoy, and you seem to have a constant quality to your music.

But in all seriousness, how many bands on here have started out as crap, but have then actually taken people's critiques on here and actually started producing "better" music. (I was never taking any of these songs made for bass comps and **** into consideration, but that might be irrelevant.)

I think so. We had a couple breaks.

Our high point was the second half of last year when I had school until 12 pm everyday, and you were unemployed.

So I got home right when you were waking up, and we talked about how desolate our lives are.

I agree with you, I have called out the "fishing for compliments" argument on people before. I think its a realistic thing to say.

But you said "no one on this forum." I had to defend myself. You understand.

I recorded music then, too. None of it was very good, but I did record.

And I uploaded some SP for you. I think you were totally into Linken Park at the time.

I need to be mentioned on the liner notes.

Your basis for this is basically assumption with nothing to back it up...

NO ONE ever asks me to elaborate. No one on here has any idea as to how thoughtful and/or helpful my critiques could be, (I'm not saying they are, I'm just saying you, nor anyone else, has any idea).

That post was dead serious except for the Pickleson. Come on, give Capital H a well thought out your critique, show me what we can do to improve for our next album.

We don't really have the time to just record songs on a whim, new songs will have to wait until we're ready to record again.
