I'm looking for a bass in the $500-$550 price range and I've considered the following:

schecter stiletto custom 4
ibanez sr500
schecter c-4
ibanez btb450qm 4
spector legend classic 4
warwick rockbass corvette classic 4

I've got an ibanez sr405 lying around that i'll be getting rid of and i want to replace it with something not to expensive but decent enough to take in the studio and get a solid sound out of.

I'm looking for a versitile bass, with a thin, fast neck that i can depend on to get the job done. Any other suggestions are appreciated. opinions??

dont bother with the rockbass, i'll say that for starters. Would you be interested in second hand? You might be able to get a full on corvette for that sort of price if you look around.
Anyhoo, I hear that the stilettos are good basses tho i dont have any experience of them.
Overall, my advice is therefore pointless. Cough.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, as far as Schecter is concerned, Studio > Custom.

When it comes to Spector, they make a decent instrument. I personally am not a fan of their Legend line, but it's only because I've played their extremely high-end line and like them better. They make a quality instrument though.

As for the Warwick, the Rockbass is a very low-end model. You'd be much better off looking for used basses. I've seen some actual Warwick Corvettes for the $500 price range.

This is a good list for me considering these models are the "high" budget ones on my next bass day. I've tried out a few. Keep in mind this is coming from a person who isn't a big fan of the whole "tree/wood" like finish.

This is probably one of the most comfortable basses I ever picked up. It probably is the lightest I've ever played on and the neck is as FAST like any other Ibanez neck. I'm about 5'9 and 135 lbs and fast necks and light bodies are all I've lived for in any instrument. The Bartolinis are a hit for me but I could understand how they wouldn't be for everyone. I find the tone to be real full when I want it to be and real bright/trebley (even too much for my personal liking) when I want it to be. I never had any experience with active eq's with bass and this was extremely user friendly.

I was recommended this bass by Jody for being "versitile" and it quite is. I find it running the same lines as the Ibanez SR and I'm drawn between in tones. As usual really deep lows and bright highs ranged. I was thoroughly impressed by the finish shown in the picture that I had the chance to play on. It's probably one of the best looking ones in the price range for sure. As it does weigh more then the SR I find the neck to be more comfortable.

I'm also interested in the Spector Legend Classic if anyone has information on it.

For build quality and fit and finish I've always had a bias to Schecters and Ibanez. I've always played those brands on the electric guitar hand and they've always wow'ed me. Real bang for buck. Yeah people will make arguments to how they are set up poorly but once you get that down they will last forever.

i still think the sr500 is the nicest bass i've played, across all price points and brands. powerful eq and the fastest neck around. i like the narrow string spacing, but not everyone will.

This always bothers me to no end... Its spelled 'input' not 'imput'... That one always kills me... Sorry for being pedantic.

get an MIM jazz. you might have enough left over for an 8 ball and a cheap hooker.

I didnt say people dont use fenders for the type of music, just that it wasnt the sound i'm looking for. I said i wanted something versitile, fast, with a thin neck/ not a fender. even if i did buy a jazz i'd have to mod this **** out of it before i was happy with it and end up spending more money.

i'm seriously looking in to this. depending on the size of my paycheck tomorrow it could be mine.

Not that the threadstarter or anyone here said this, but I hate it when people think that jazz basses are only made for jazz and can't be used for other types of music. It also annoys me when people say that P bass is not for slapping.

o well i think i'm going with the sr500. seems to be what i'm looking for, and it's not going to break the bank, which is always a good thing.

I managed to pick up a used corvette standard for $600, and i haven't ever regretted it. Its got an awesome growl, which would sound great for metal. I usualy play basses with thinner necks, but the warwick still feels great to me.

I believe TS said he didn't want the Fender sound, not that he wanted to sound like Martin Mendez.

i don't know who would want to sound like mendez. it's pretty much the definition of being buried in the mix IMO... though the "subtleness" this adds to the overall mix could be a good thing as well, i guess that's what he (mendez) wants.
