i really really like epic stuff. so seeing as i'm not a fan of powermetal or "prog", it's hard for me to find enough music to satisfy my needs. for example, i'm really into songs by Beirut such as Postcards from Italy and Guyamas Sonora with huge breaks into all this brass and heavy percussion, or stuff by Efterklang like the song Mirador. also, lots and lots of Flaming Lips (Soft Bulletin). i also love Iron Maiden although i'm certainly looking for stuff more fitting of this forum. it doesn't have to be contemporary though. traditional folk tunes from different countries and classical compositions are very welcome.
so pretty much, can you help me with finding some really really epic stuff. preferably with a wide range of instruments like strings and brass and all.
thanks in advance.

Time of Orchids. Either Sarcast While or Namesake Caution.
The Microphones' The Glow Pt. 2 is also really good.

Time of Orchids is perfect
Someone tagged me as "epic post-rock" on last.fm
Can you feel it, see it, hear it today?
If you can't, then it doesn't matter anyway
You will never understand it 'cause it happens too fast
And it feels so good, it's like walking on glass

Sunset Rubdown - Shut Up I Am Dreaming
Múm - Go Go Smear The Poison Ivy
Oh god yes. I love Mum, but Sunset Rubdown's easily one of my favoritest bands ever. The title track of Shut Up I Am Dreaming is easily one of the most epic. The rest isn't necessarily as epic, just ridiculously good.
Also, I assume you've heard/been recommended Godspeed You! Black Emperor before? If you can stand 25 minute songs, there's usually a couple pretty epic parts in each one.

Look up Eric Whitacre. He's a contemporary composer and does full band and a capella (and techno opera if you count his Paradise Lost). Maybe not epic in definition to some but certainly emotive and powerful.

The last track from () by Sigur Ros is easily the most epic track of all time. All their albums are ridiculously epic though.

Also some Arcade Fire, especially from Neon Bible, has some pretty epic horn stuff that you might like if you haven't already heard, eg No Cars Go, Ocean of Noise.

They're pretty good...there's bands that do the same thing better, but they've got some really nice songs. "High on Fire" is my favourite song at the moment. If you dig shoegaze and dreamy pop music then you should definitely check them out. The self-titled is the album to get.
