View Full Version : How many strings can it go?

So, i'm a complete guitar rookie, and this may be a total shot in the dark, but i have an idea: Grab the thickest necked 12-string bass you can get your hands on, screw the neck off, screw it onto a reliable, sturdy guitar, and start customizing your own headstock/bridge setup to have as many strings as your better judgment will let you. How many strings do you think could fit while still remaining a useful instrument? How big would the bottom string have to be (maybe bass strings?) and how small would the top string have to be? Just tossing it out there. Maybe the amount of sound made would blow out the electronics?

There really is no need for something below of a C#, it is ridiculous.
And nothing higher than I guess an Ab.

Tell that to Yves Carbonnne who has a B below C#
but anyway, so I understand the question: you want to take a 12 string bass neck and put it on a guitar? Single course or octaved 12 string?

You'd need bigger pickups too.

This plan is awful.

Alright, why?
Besides risk of damage; this is purely hypothetical.

I'm confused. How exactly would a 12 string bass neck ever fit onto a normal guitar body?

because it likely wouldn't work and pretty much no one would ever attempt it

String tension.
Pickup size.
Neck pocket size.
Bridge.
Among other things.

This.
also: building a 12 string isn't exactly a job for an amateur luthier or hobbyist.

I don't have a problem with having a lot of strings. I have a problem with putting a lot of strings on an instrument not designed to have a lot of strings. This would be a hell of a lot of work for what would end up a shoddy instrument.
