Yeah, new Cormac McCarthy adaptation of his 2007 Pulitzer winning novel 'The Road' will be directed by John Hillcoat (The Proposition) and will most likely star Viggo Mortensen and Charlize Theron. Very brief synopsis in link.

i can see charlize theron playing the wife of the protagonist. i can also see viggo as the protagonist, so there's some good casting calls here. if it's directed right, it has a ton of potential.

really fantastic novel, by the way.

Yer I haven't read it, but I love McCarthy's work (Blood Meridian, All the Pretty Horses) and is probably the best American writer alive.

loved the book, it'll be interesting to see how they approach making the film.

Update: Robert Duvall and Guy Pearce have also been named in the cast. Young Aussie actor Kodi Smit-McPhee (plays Eric Bana's character's son in Romulus, My Father) will play the son.

This just gets better and better.

Okay bumping this thread for some news and a PICTURE.

http://chud.com/articles/articles/14802/1/TAKE-A-LOOK-AT-THE-ROAD/Page1.html

I don't think Guy Pearce is in it anymore but whatever, Viggo seems to be the right choice and he has the talent to do it easily.

Can't wait for this. Loved the book, cast sounds good. I loved No Country, book and movie. And Blood Meridian was really good too. He really is one of the better living American writers, as was already mentioned.

RunAmokRampant

Blood Meridian is getting an adaptation too. By Ridley Scott I believe.

Can't wait for that either. I'm not a big Ridley Scott fan though. The only movie of his I like is Black Hawk down.

A quick imdb query shows me that Ridley is producing 7 movies, all with release dates in the next two years. So if he is doing Blood Meridian (which isn't one of the seven), it probably won't be for a while.

Really? I heard it was heading for a late 2009 release.

Alien is, and probably will be always, his greatest achievement.

05-22-2008, 02:29 AM
I dunno if you checked it out for yourself, but here is what he's got coming out. Busy man:
Emma's War (2009) (in production) (producer)
Factor X (2010) (pre-production) (producer)
Welcome to the Rileys (2009) (pre-production) (producer)
Cracks (2009) (filming) (executive producer)
Tell-Tale (2009) (post-production) (producer)
Body of Lies (2008) (post-production) (producer)
Churchill at War (2008) (post-production) (executive producer)

RunAmokRampant
05-22-2008, 05:23 AM
yeah but he's producing those is he?

On wiki it says he is directing Blood Meridian to be released in 2009 but that's most likely speculative perhaps.

I just finished reading this book last night. I thought it was good. Maybe not as good as a lot of people hyped it up to be, but still very good. The last 5 or 10 pages was one of the most moving pieces of literature I've read in awhile.

i think this is my most anticipated movie for the next few months. i love mccarthy, viggo's great, guy pearce is great, nick cave and warren ellis are great, and all the pictures from the set pretty much matched my mental picture of the setting. I think I'll check out The Proposition to familiarize myself with Hillcoat.

really fantastic novel, by the way.

This. I'm reading The Crossing right now. I like his style.

The wife is barely in it at all, I can only remember one or two flashbacks about her in the book. Can't imagine it'll be a huge part.

This movie better be beautifully shot and expertly produced if it hopes to come close to matching the amazing imagery that the novel put into my brain.

Yeah apparently they do some digitally editing with the ttrees and sky and more general ash to enhance the apocalyptic atmosphere. By some of the photos it looks perfectly rendered imo.

Interesting.
I never read the NCFOM book but I really did enjoy the movie. I don't remember if All the Pretty Horses was good as a movie because it's been years since I've seen it but I chose to read the book for a project my senior year and it was great.
This should be good.

First trailer is out.

Obviously a trailer intended to bring in the audience that hasn't read the book. But from all the footage, looks very decent. Viggo looks great.

RunAmokRampant
05-15-2009, 10:46 AM
i dislike how the trailer implies that this is an action film esp if audiences who havent read the book will go in expecting something like I am Legend who will probably be very disappointed. I also read an early review from Esquire which states this will be the most important film of the year.

Anyway the actual footage of the film other than those gay pop words which really is degrading, looks fantastic. Visually it has captured the tone of the novel perfectly.

Can't believe how much Hillcoat and McCarthy have stressed that not explaining what happened was an important conscious decision yet Weinstein can't refrain from getting his grubby hands to tarnish this important decision of the film.
