Let me give you an idea of the kind of music I'm asking about.

I'm not strictly looking at one genre, though I guess most of it would fall under some kind of power metal rubric. Basically bands that recreate the feeling of reading shitty paperback novels like Wheel of Time and A Game of Thrones.

Yes, I know there's a fantasy metal tag on last.fm, but picking through a zillion bands isn't the same as getting feedback from intelligent human beings imo. There are a good deal of suck bands with that tag.

Examples of good bands I know that definitely fit into this category are:

Summoning (WIN! WIN!)
Rhapsody, now Rhapsody of Fire
Battlelore
Elexorien
Luca Turilli
maybe Ensiferum?

I mean, pretty much upbeat or at least sanguine music. A lot of other black metal would otherwise enter into this group e.g., En Ring Til Å Herske by Burzum but I'm sort of looking to put together a soundtrack for my epic third semester of college and one obviously can't have depressive black metal ruining the fun.

Absolutely nothing is too contrived or bombastic to meet my criteria. The more ridiculous the better.

Yes, I realize this post is the most self-serving ever but, hopefully, we can generate some interesting discussion out of it.

EDIT - Rata Blanca as well, even if everyone here hates them. La Leyenda De La Hada y El Mago wins; I don't care what anyone else says.

I dunno if like viking/folk metal fits what your looking for but if its over the top epic **** then you should check some turisas. They are very over the top.

Also 3 inches Of Blood are very fantasy epic type stuff even though they are metalcorish

1338 h4x0r
01-22-2008, 03:16 AM
Turisas are win. Among Your Ancestors is archetypal epic pwnage, even though their grasp of English is shaky.

As far as lyrics go, Amon Amarth pwn the hell out of everyone for being really terse, gory and epic.

Three Inches of Blood are, eh, amusing. I'm not a huge metalcore fan as of now, although that seems to be changing with exposure.

Manowar, Hammerfall, Maiden & Dio for sure, unless you're trying to avoid more classic stuff. Some Candlemass is "epic" in a sense but it might be more Doom metal then what you're after.

Also Sonata Arctica is probably a more appropriate suggestion though I doubt they've gone under your radar. I really like the song San Sebastian, should listen to them more.

Strangely*, there are several good Celtic metal acts from South America: Tuatha de Danaan from Brazil and Skiltron from Argentina are a few examples.

* - a Celtic metal band from Argentina actually makes sense because of the minority Welsh population there

I recently realized that the monologue in Sacred Power of Raging Winds sounds an awful lot like Christopher Lee as Saruman, laying the magic frostbitten smack down on the Fellowship as they crossed Caradhras in the Misty Mountains to Moria.

NAIRA... ORIEL...TARNA...
Majestic winds of the northlands...
protect our heroes from the deadly Naroth...
cover their tracks with snow...
Rage on with all your fury...
NAIRA... TARNA... ORIEL-NIRNAAN…

Unmistakably. If you go on YouTube and look for the Unholy Warcry complete version (~ ten and a half minutes long), he appears on an opulent throne with a Burger King crown narrating the story. You can even find a video of him and Fabio Lione singing Magic of the Wizard's Dream as a duet live on German television. He has a baller singing voice and a pitch-perfect Cherman achcent.

that is great. i can think of girls that like all sorts of musics. i'm just saying if you want to have sex with an actual attractive girl, epic / fantasy metal isn't the way to go.

Well, Colombian women tend to be attractive. In fact, pretty much every Spanish-speaker in Latin America knows about Rata Blanca, with song titles like La Leyenda de la Hada y el Mago ("The Legend of the Fairy and the Mage") putting them firmly in the 'epic/fantasy' category ... they're a really popular band in general. And Latin American women, as you probably know, are typically hot. (Polish women usually are also lookers :naughty:)

Anyway, how does the music, or, indeed, any other medium you consume limit the kind of people you can associate with? That makes no sense ... one of my friends is a Pentacostal Christian and the fact that I listen to Viking death metal has no bearing on that. I listen to Ad Hominem, don't take them too seriously and I have Jewish friends. Does listening to Rhapsody, for example, cause a repellent force field to radiate around your **** and balls? Maybe if you're trying to attract shallow, 15-year old scene girls who wear too much eye-liner and judge people negatively for having their own opinions about things. Otherwise, no. My friend Eric has been married for I think two years now and Iron Maiden etc. are part of his music library. (Mentally mature) women are attracted to intelligence and this kind of music is usually listened to by ... intelligent people ...

In short, if anyone seriously thinks any less of you for the music you listen to, they don't deserve to be around you.

Back on topic - Seraphim, what do guys you think? I know people usually make fun of Asian metal bands, sometimes with good reason, but I think they really have it. I guess they sound a bit too much like Nightwish but managed to distinguish themselves anyway (male vocalist, ethnic influences, etc.).

I've heard a lil of them, but not enough to really pass judgement.

Yeah, Daedeloth are a black metal band, which means that I don't play them for anyone else unless I know they like black metal.

Its quite good indeed, though in my opinion I reccomend later on Blind Guardian stuff, just not the newest album.

But then again I think that's just 'cause I dislike the old and not clean feel of a lot of their older stuff.

I didn't really like Nightfall in Middle-earth (properly spelled with a lower case 'e' in 'earth') that much. The songs seemed somewhat to meander and not go anywhere. Yeah, I like taking a walk in the Elven woods and everything but there'd be a battle or feast or some **** in the middle somewhere, see?

Again, maybe it's simply a repeat listens affair.

Hmm ... Eldamar - Oriental influences in Tolkien-based music: innovative or just plain retarded? I like Oriental metal but Elven Tears isn't quite sitting well with me.

Word. I'll probably give it a listen. Right now I'm listening to Father of Victory by Folkearth, which is inherently a hit-or-miss affair. The title track is absolutely beautiful, I can say that much. The Purest Bree, a metalcore crossover attempt on the second track, was kind of grating.

They're a great band even if they aren't what I was looking for. But let the OT discussion flourish!

Incidentally, their last album, 01011001, is the ASCII code for 'Y'. I wonder if there's any significance in that. Maybe it's supposed to be an open-ended question?

"01011001" is the seventh studio album by Arjen Anthony Lucassen's long-running Ayreon project. "01011001" is the binary form of the number 89, which is the ASCII code for the letter Y. 01011001's plot is tied to the "Planet Y" and "Forever of the Stars" storyline developed in the albums Into the Electric Castle, Universal Migrator and The Human Equation.

LOL @ Flint Lock Glock

Actually, Viking rap would make a lot of sense, when you consider that archaeological evidence suggests that Norse men had more elaborate clothing and ornaments than women (bling), competed at improvising poetry while drunk (battle raps), ran raids on foreign villages (robbery/murder), burned down rivals' homes (drive-bys) and eventually put a rest to their violent ways at a certain age (putting tha thug life behind you).

They even cut grooves into their teeth and filled them with ink for identification, the world's first primitive attempt at fashioning 'grillz'.
