I'm not one to endorse drug use, honestly, being a bitter cynic, but a few days ago I dropped acid and listened to The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place for something like six to eight hours, and it was so perfect and moving for the whole experience.
I'm not a huge fan of the ambient, relaxed post-rock. Earth... was such a nice mix of epic and relaxed, though. I need more, in case I ever decide to do mind-expanding drugs ever again. Are their other albums as good, and if not, what other "post-rock" albums are as absolutely intense and emotional as that one?
Waldo

Pretty sure the only reason it was "intense and emotional" was because you were on acid.
AndreTheHyena

No, I've heard it before, whilst sober, and it was still emotional and intense.

I imagine Those Who Tell The Truth would have been somewhat of a dramatic experience on acid
I want to listen to EitS on shrooms I didn't remember to last time :\

They really are.
Nobody was really getting it though when I saw them with the Pumpkins. There was like one guy a few rows before me that was totally into it but I, unfortunately, had to listen to commentary from these two douchebags who obviously didn't appreciate them.
They were sweet though, when they get going it really is like a prolonged explosion going off.

I'm sure they'd be amazing with some LSD in my bloodstream, though.

Can't wait to see these guys live in April. Everyone keeps telling me great things.
As for similar albums I'd suggest God Is An Astronsaut's last two albums, Sigur Ros' () and Godspeed! You Black Emperor -
Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Anteneas to Heaven <-- (the essential Godspeed)
I definetly spelled anteneas wrong...who cares

Lift Your Skinny Fists.... It's good. When you're tripping, you're pretty much completely enthralled by the music. It's like being inside of a movie. That's the best way to describe it.

To be honest, if you end up digging Godspeed at all there is no one essential album. Get 'em all why not right?

I saw them this summer at VirginFest, bad venue for their show but was still amazing. Going to catch them in March (I think) at Aspen and in Denver, pretty pumped. Not too many shows come to Denver/Boulder/basically anywhere I can get to.

I think that's as good of a post-rock album as I have ever heard.
Godisanastronaut- All Is Violent, All Is Bright
This Will Destroy You- Young Mountain
Low In The Sky- We Are All Counting On You, William (debatably post-rock, I guess)

I'd say that Godspeed! was the more cerebral of the two, or at least the one with stranger song structures and more ambiance in their song writing, along with more experimental instrumentation.
But thats just my take.

I did want a seat last night, but it was still awesome. No-one was really pushing to get to the front, and it was a surprisingly energetic gig from them considering their brand of music. The bassist dropped his pick during the last song and was smacking the **** out of his guitar, then the strap came loose, so his guitar was flailing about madly, was pretty nuts.

I've just found out that EiTS are playing kind of near where I live this tuesday. My birthday is the day before so I have to drive up from my mum's place to the gig which is like 300 miles away. My girlfriend's house where I live at the moment is only like an hour away from the venue.
Hmmm tempting...

Saw Explosions last night and they were pretty good.

Team Racket, you must be kidding. Anson Rooms is such a hole, one of the worst venues I've been to - it really sucks the atmosphere I reckon.
Also it might just be me being a snob, but people really shouldn't clap along to eits songs. I can't think of anything more cringeworthy.

I was off my tits and the air conditioning felt good. Ok the clapping and head banging was akin to a Shania Twain concert, but the sound was fine to me. Thats all i expected, not some super cool venue where I can chill out and be all hip and take the piss out of people having a good time. We are all students after all.
Worst venue goes to the Cooler, cant see a thing unless you stand on the platform at the back :p
Pastorius
01-27-2008, 02:30 PM
I saw Minus the Bear at the cooler, they weren't very good, sound was bad, they weren't bringing any of the atmosphere of their song to the live experience, it was a shame.
But Kid Carpet was supporting, which provided much comedy.

01-27-2008, 04:14 PM
That sucks. I caught Mono and Jesu there and it was ok, just absolutely rammed so it was hard to see anything. The sound was also pretty rubbish which made the show worse considering Mono played for what seemed like three hours.

01-28-2008, 02:51 PM
The Bristol crowd got into it, few people from here complaining because of that, but I think it made it better, no-one was going mental or anything (except for the guy who goes mental at every gig), just a sufficient amount of head nodding.
I like shows where people stand around with their arms folded.

probably my best listening experience ever was with this album.
it was finals time, and i just finished studying for like 5 hours straight at the library on campus.
i came out and was gonna try and catch the last bus on the night, but i missed it.
middle of winter, about 1:30 in the morning, i decide to throw on the ipod and make the cold, 40 minute walk back to my place.
randomly throw on earth is not a cold dead place, and everything was just perfect.
the cold, the night, nobody around, snow falling...it was just perfect.
the only moment... in particular is amazing.

As far as post-rock on acid is concerned, I have previously gone with Do Make Say Think's music on shuffle (it's actually where their first album really shines). I also would listen to Yndi Halda. And of course GY!BE's Lift Your Skinny Fists is necessary, mostly for the experience.
