I know it's trendy to hate them because Inhuman Rampage was boring and repetitive and because they can get away with playing fast, drunken solos but really people used to like them whether they'll admit it or not.

I don't take them seriously and find power metal a fun genre regardless but it's hard to appreciate this band after i've heard a song I admittedly enjoyed very much (Fury of The Storm), which set a kind of standard. I listened to their last two albums and every song sounded virtually the same, but not quite so good (because it was the first song I listened to and the benchmark of all Dragonforce after for me, the same i'm sure people measure anything else they listen to against TTFAF after they first hear it).

Musically its pure wankery, especially with guitars and thats usually cool with me. But the fact they've been reported many times to be often unable to keep up the pace and play their own technical parts live means they are undeserving of being praised for this outside of the studio. I don't judge them negatively for sucking aѕs live. Summoning don't play live; I can't imagine that's even possible. Jean-Michel Jarre plays live but everyone knows his concerts are staged to some extent. (IIRC, he fuсked up sequencing with the fake laser harp in Rendez-Vous III; it was kind of like Milli Vanilli except he actually wrote the song.)

Instead, I judge them by the quality of their composition. They're pretty good IMO. Not my favorite power metal, but pretty good.

Live ability does come into question when the band is praised for being masterful players which I imagine is the primary appeal for many of their fans. Most of their riffs are simple but fast, they use pretty much the same exact ideas over and over too. If you listen to all of their albums you'll realize that they do the whole "fast tremolo rhythm with lead over it" during verses and "k lets hold power chords and rest" during choruses ALOT. I've only listened to Valley of the Damned 3 times so far, but there are so many moments that they basically completely ripped off from it on their albums after that, and not just the ones I mentioned.

That and Fury Of The Storm are probably the only two Dragonforce songs I like much.
