I still don't see why you people feed into these stupid genre names.

I can't get into this genre. Every band sounds like a bunch of people saying "hey! Look how good we are at our instruments!" It's impressive for about 30 seconds, but then I want to run away.

Yeah, I agree that genres exist but I stay away from terms like "progressive", "emo", "math rock", "grunge", and all that ****.

that's not math rock, thats probably "math metal" or "mathcore" or something much more obnoxious like DEP. math rock is even MORE fake and misleading as a term because it really just refers to dissonant indie rock that switches moods through the course of a song.
like Polvo (which i'm listening to right now) is basically just Pavement + Sonic Youth. nobody is trying to go crazy with their instruments, they just make unique sounds at a non-crazy tempo and volume.
and Rodan is just Slint with some heavier passages. really great.

what is math rock?
like... people who sing about algebra equations or something?
'distance equals the square root of x-sub two minus x-sub one squared plus y-sub two minus y-sub one squaredddddddd'
I could totally see that being a chart topper

I like Slint and Rodan, but I always thought of them more as post-rock/hardcore. What's so mathmatical about their music?
(this is why genre labels suck)

yeah i dont understand why theyre called math-rock either but that is what this thread is about so unfortunately we gotta roll with it. in fact, i think its a worse label than even emo because at least you know what kind of music is being (incorrectly) discussed.
with math-rock its just all wrong :(

I always though it was called math-rock because of all the complex rythems, time signatures, mood swings, and crazy skilled musicians. Its so 'complex' just like math is. If math=complex, the equation math-rock can easily be changed to complex-rock.
