Does anybody have any experience with it? Is it worth purchasing? In fact are auto tuners or the like worth getting at all?

I have experience with the Antares AT-1 (hardware unit), and also GSnap by GVST (VST plugin). I've seen Melodyne in action, but haven't used it myself.

Such software is useful provided either (1) you have intonation problems and can't correct them with another take for some reason, or (2) you have a creative/timbral use for them in mind and that effect is how you obtain it.

By the way, GVST's GSnap is a freeware VST plugin for Windows. A Google search should turn it up rather quickly. You might consider trying that out before you start spending money. It's pretty good for light tweaks.
