Marvel Comics is so hardcore
Spiderman has been around since like 1960
and yet every day there are three more little boxes with a story in them.
BUT the movie makes me not like Spidey
and X-Men is sweet
but again, the movie is VERY incorrect
and then there is Thor
He's just amazing

The movies were a success, yes, but I'd go as far as to say that Batman and Superman are bigger comic book icons than the X-Men.

Yeah, Superman has been around since 1938. That's some extreme staying power.
However, I wasn't really a DC fan either. I really enjoyed reading Uncanny X-Men, at least, until that whole Onslaught story arc happened. That's when I completely stopped reading X-Men. It was only until last year did I pick up a random issue, and even then, I didn't continue.
I still have a small stack of issues I felt were more important to keep.

Oh man...
The Green Lantern/Sinestro Corp Ring is an extension of the will of the user. Through their thoughts and will power, the user can create any construct they want. The ring can provide information, act as a beacon ot communication device, personal atmosphere, even cure ailments (if Hal Jordan had a medical history, he could theoretically cure cancer). The only limit to the ring is it's charge length and the willpower of the user. The stronger the willpower, the more complex/powerful the abilities are.
So if I had one of those rings, I could create a giant teddy bear wielding a bat and rampage through the city.
Oh, it does provide shielding too.

Marvel Zombies was hilarious, especially them devouring the Devourer of Worlds, and his harbinger. The Civil War series was a thing of beauty barring some minor exceptions.
I like a lot of the heroes mentioned so far, but my favorite is either Multiple Man or Karnak. Sending out dupes to learn about everything, or in case I need some back up to save my ***, is awesome. And, of course Karnak, being able to find the flaw in anything, is just fun to ruin other people's fun.

Marvel Zombies was rad. Marvel Zombies 2, eh. Also I'm kinda disappointed that Cable & Deadpool is coming to and end. I don't buy a lot of these huge story arc shits like Civil War, Messiah Complex, Annihilation, etc. but I could always count on Cable & Deadpool.
Also, I used to have this totally awesome X-Men computer game the was a 2d action side-scroller. It had something to do with the supervillain Arcade. It was crap and it wasn't. It's hard to explain.

Nice! A Marvel Comics thread. I sold mine in the early 90s.
I was an avid Captain America fan. Steve Rogers was my hero.
I had Tales of Suspense # 1 through 100, and then Captain America took over from 100 on. I had up to issue 300 when he finally kills the Red Skull. I sold them all for good money.
Also, Marvel Super Hero Secret Wars, which was when Spidy got the Venom suit. I made a ton selling that. Wolverine's first special edition knock off also was sold. It was only 4 issue mini series.
Just goes to show collecting comics might be nerdly but if I recall I sold my whole collection for close to a thousand bucks.

I was gonna say, older comic books are getting ridiculously expensive to buy in near mint condition. The first Tales of Suspense for example in near mint condition fetches over $2000 now.
I've started collecting recently, I have a few Captain America issues round about #250 onwards I can't remember exactly and Top Cat #2 which I just bought but some of them are ridiculously expensive now.

There is a Captain America in the 240s or 250s I forget that had Daredevil in it and that one book sold for a pretty penny individually.
I'll be honest and say as cheesy as it sounds, from like #220 or so on, Cap had good stuff going on. That comic was a really great read aside from the usual superhero stuff.

I just double checked in my Overstreet comic book guide (it's from 2002 but it does the job) and Tales Of Suspense #1 in near mint condition goes for roughly $2100. This is a 5 year old guide though so the price will definitely have gone up.

Wow. Well, let this be a lesson to me.
It was mint. I had all my comics in individual mylar bags with the stupid cardboard. It took me a long time to find them all too.
I was so meticulous with caring for them. I barely even read the old ones for fear of messing them up.

Damn man. Yeah the mint ones are going for stupid money, it's great if you're selling them but hopeless if, like me you're just starting out collecting.
That reminded me, I had tons of Beano comics from the 80's/90's which have now started to go up in value a bit as well. I came home from school one day a few years ago to find my mum had thrown them away. I went mental for about 2 days.

Well, after the big shitstorm that was OMD(One More Day), they brought Harry Osborn back from the dead, never made Peter and MJ married, and erased like 20 years of continuity so they could go back to telling "good ol classic spidey stories!". And theres this new superhero named Jackpot with red hair and its almost too obvious that its MJ. They fricked with Spider-man so much. I have no idea how Spider-man fits into marvel continuity anymore. I wonder if Norman Osborn (who right now is in charge of the Insanely awesome Thunderbolts) even knows his son is alive?

What is Daredevil doing these days?
Synopsis for the current arc:
Matt thought his life was finally back on track. He cleared his name, resumed his law practice, and reunited with his wife Milla. But it was all a stack of cards.
Mr. Fear, the man responsible for the rash of violent crime tearing through Hell's Kitchen, has been plotting against Matt for quite some time. Now he's led Daredevil into his trap, using Milla as the bait. After being poisoned with Mr. Fear's deadly drug, Milla went into a psychotic rage that caused the death of an innocent bystander.
Only the witness testimony of Lily Lucca - the very woman Milla tried to kill in a fit or irrational jealousy - kept Milla out of a mental institution and confined to home custody instead. But Mr. Fear has gone to ground. Furious for revenge, Daredevil has gone after his biggest lead to find Mr. Fear: his number-one enforcer, the Ox.
yea so basically Mr Fear drugged Matt's wife to the point of her being insane, so he's out for revenge. Daredevil is in his own little world in Hell's kitchen, but I dont mind. The art is grreat, nice and gritty, perfect for this kind of book. Brubaker is such a good writer, although this arc is getting kinda long, its still a great read.

I'd probably enjoy it because I gotta admit that I'm not big into the big crossover stuff, I tend to gravitate toward limited runs and self-contained stuff. The big stuff is interesting and sometimes I feel compelled to check out some of the stuff but I don't keep a pull list so I always end up missing out on issues. But the best mainstream books are usually embroiled in that ****.
I'm digging all the golden age revival stuff that's coming out right now. The Twelve is cool, Project Superpowers seems neat and that Fantastic Comics thing was cool.

Well you're definitely going to want to pick up Secret Invasion, which starts on the 2nd of April. It's a huge marvel event that's going to affect a ton of books.
Some books that you can easily jump into without having to buy back issues would probably be Invincible Iron Man , which is a new iron man ongoing that begins may 7th.
Cable has a new solo book which began march 5th, which looks fairly interesting if you're into the fate of the x-baby and cable's time travelling powers.
Joss Whedon's Run on Astonishing X-men is about to end in may, and supposedly Warren Ellis is going to start his run in early 2008. But honestly, you could probably jump into any x-book right now and not be completely lost.
Amazing Spider-Man is coming out three times a month. You could probably jump into the beginning of a new arc (which starts april 2nd), and you'll most likely be fine.
As for my favorite books, you would definitely have to pick up some back issues(or torrent them), to see whats happening.
Captain America[I] is ****ing awesome right now.
[I]Thunderbolts is badass aswell.
actually here's a link of Marvels top 10 books and I would mostyl agree with it.
http://comics.ign.com/articles/861/861728p1.html
Hope that helps somewhat.
But definitely, definitely pick up Secret Invasion, because its gonna change the status quo of the marvel U completely and if you're going to start reading comics again, it's going to be a required reading to know what's going on.

I started reading Amazing Spider-man starting at the One More Day arc and I'm caught up now to the current issue. Read wikipedia for the rest of the background. Like it so far. Spider-man has a fresh start so it's not as confusion as I thought it would be.
I want to give Captain America a try. At what issue/series or whatever (not exactly sure how that stuff works) should I start reading? Don't want to get too far back, but just enough to give me a solid background for the current stuff. I'm planning on reading the Civil War comics though since that seems to be important an important event for the capt.

I've found that you can fine almost any recent comic (or old sometimes) online simply by going into google and typing the title and issue number along with megaupload (or rapishare, sendspace, mediashare, or any other hosting site) right after. Somewhere in the first page, you'll usually find links to forums sharing comics. ex: "amazing Spider-Man 545 megaupload" (without quotes)

Wikipedia says Blind Al from Deadpool will play a role in the Skrull invasion as a duplicate. Says "[citation needed]" though and I can't find anything about that on google. Hope it isn't true or else that would suck ***.
Also Found this with every single Thunderbolts issue. Gonna start reading with the New Thunderbolts issues. Too lazy to read any further back. Only read 2 so far. It hasn't really done much for me yet, but gonna keep on reading a bit more before giving it up.

I like Fabian Nicieza and all because he was the writer for Cable and Deadpool, but still. ****, Thunderbolts just got TONS better when he left at issue 110 and Ellis/Deotato took over. I kind of miss the old line-up, but having Bullseye and Venom is kickass. It bothers me a bit that there has only been two "real" fight scenes so far, but the artwork/action has been incredible whenever anything breaks out.

Damn, how do you guys do it? 1 new issue per month. I can't stand the wait. Having to wait 1 week for a new episode of a tv show is brutal enough, but 1 issue per month for comic books is even worst. It only takes 15-20 minutes max to read one comic book and then you'll left waiting another month to know what will happen next.
Now that I'm all caught up with the comics I want to read, I'm all anxious over the upcoming issues.

I'm trudging through Ultimate X-Men at the moment, and it's less than stellar. I really don't like them as teens. It adds unnecessary drama and a lot of cringe-worthy dialogue. There's also a plethora of exactitudes in action sequences where the characters spurt out facts and figures they've seemingly memorized from dossiers. There's enough mentioning of their training to not require such specific detail that highlight just how powerful they are or how dire the situation is.
Also, Colossus may be gay; tee hee.

Pfft.. torrents are so yesterday. People use rapidshare, megaupload, and mediafire for comic book sharing nowadays. Just use these search engines that scan the interwebs for links.
http://megadownload.net/(my main one)
http://4megaupload.com/
http://rapidlibrary.com/
Just enter the title along with the issue number. Sometimes adding a some zeros to the number helps. (ex: 3, 03, or 003). You can also add cbr at the end to be more specific. If you want to download more than one issue at a time, just type the title along with rar or zip.
For new releases, 4chan's rapidshare sections is great. People tend to scan them and put them on /co/ the very same day they're out and [rs] picks up the link.

Just make sure you get Punisher Max, not Punisher War Journal. Also, I think Secret Invasion has been pretty lame so far. The pacing has been horrible. I hate that there's like 20 difference scenes in each issue so nothing gets explored in depth before the scene changes to another location. http://rapidshare.com/files/15494457/The_Punisher_v5__13-18_-_Mother_Russia.rar
Punisher War Journal is fine, but I don't think it even starts to compare to the writing in Max. The difference is that that Max doesn't involve any super powers (same universe though), while War Journal does. Now I know that might sound a bit lame for Max and I thought that too at first, but trust me when I say it's not. Also, War Journal is kind of rated PG compared to what happens in Max.

The Final Marvel Comic
At the foot of the Sacramento Mountains, 100 miles from Carlsbad Caverns, in New Mexico, a proud god stands alone as his red cloak hangs thickly in the warm, still air. His eyes raised to the sky, he is quiet, swearing an oath to his father, dead these many years now. The oath was one of victory against his opponent--his implacable, unreasoning foe.
His home was the once-fair Asgard, destroyed in a dozen Ragnaroks, 'til little remained that he remembered from his youth. Balder, Odin, Fandral, his beloved Sif--even his trickster brother Loki had perished in the last battle of gods.
But his warrior's heart was undefeated. In fact, as he had aged, he became more powerful than ever, and the might of his mystic hammer, Mjolnir, was more fearsome than at any time in history. Ten, a hundred, a thousand times stronger than before.
He would need all that power and more.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The creature that was once Bruce Banner began the final leap that would land him in proximity with his enemy. His merest effort brought him a distance of miles, and though Banner's great intelligence wasn't available to the beast, he instinctively understood the mathematics involved in landing exactly where he chose.
Once he had been only a manifestation of the angry and vengeful side of Banner, but as the years passed, Banner's self was absorbed and hidden away. The scientist was simply too tired to fight back against the Hulk, and surrendered. And was devoured, mentally.
Now there was only rage--there was only the Hulk.
And the madder Hulk gets, the stronger he gets.
And it turns out, he could get far more angry than anyone had ever suspected.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"You have arrived, Hulk. Thor doth vow, 'tis unfortunate that we must...,"
"Long Hair talks too much."
"Thor was merely..."
"Shut UP, Long Hair! Stupid talk hurts Hulk's EARS!"

"...Very well then, Hulk. I accept your..."
"HULK MEANT THOR'S MAMA SO FAT SHE IS HERD OF COW! HAHAHAHA! STUPID THOR'S MAMA! HA HA HA!"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And so they fought...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thor, fueled by his own doubts regarding his mother's appearance and virtue, was enraged by the hurtful remarks of the Green Goliath, and threw Mjolnir towards the brute's face. The impact was so severe, glass was shattered later that same day, as far away as Hong Kong.
"NOT BAD HIT FOR LITTLE GIRL, HULK GUESS. OH, WAIT! GIRL NOT HIT HULK, STUPID LONG HAIR HIT HULK! LONG HAIR COMPLETELY PUNY, IN THAT CASE."
The Hulk then slapped his hands towards Thor so powerfully, with an impact so devastating, that Thor's hair changed color and his helmet began singing German opera.
"Oh, forgive me friend Hulk-- Thor realized NOT that the battle had BEGUN, so inconsequential was thy strike!"
With all the fury of the Norse pantheon behind him, Thor dealt the Hulk a vicious uppercut at speeds far beyond what the human eye could perceive, hitting the beast so hard that all prime numbers disappeared from the universe, and the planets reversed their orbits.
"HEY, GIRL MAN! HULK ALMOST FEEL THAT! STUPID GIRL MAN SHOULD DRINK MILK, LIFT TRUCKS, JOIN HEALTH CLUB, MAYBE SOMEDAY ACTUALLY HURT HULK! YEAH, AND MAYBE SOMEDAY, STUPID THOR'S MAMA EAT A CARROT!"
Enraged, but desperate not to show it, the Hulk leapt into the air, landing directly on the sworn protector of Midgard, the astonishing force of which hurtled Thor directly through the bowels of the Earth and into a geostationary orbit, until Thor returned, with his skin seared from the speed of his descent, and his nostril hairs inexplicably turned into perfect macrame.
"By the gods, what a blow thou hast struck, Hulk! Thor hath not been hit so hard since this new morn, when a lowly FLY landed on Thor's shoulder!"
And it went on like that. They hit each other until they traveled through time. They hit each other until they changed species. They hit each other until Joan Collins won an Oscar and loud talking was encouraged in libraries. They hit each other until fish could knit and the sun wore pants. They hit each other until the Earth froze, caught fire, and froze again. They hit each other until humans got so good at using their tails, they couldn't imagine life without them. They hit each other... well, they hit each other until the Watchmen sequel finally revealed that Kid Ozymandias did it.
It was a long time.
"...Well...urk.. sentient puddle of Hulk with no... arms or legs...dost thou yet... yield?"
"Stupid...eighth dimensional...quadratic equation Thor...come here. Sentient puddle of Hulk...is weary. Sentient Puddle of Hulk...will surrender. Puddle Hulk will...say ...just one thing. Stupid...eighth-dimensional...quadratic equation Thor's mama...so...so...fa...urgh."
"...Rest well...my ages-long enemy. Thou has earned it. And e'now of battle--for my wounds are too great, and my fire ...is too dim. Thor shall join thee in Valhalla...aaaaahggh!"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And the three remaining panels were used for character development.

Some artists do that when his claws come out to add a little more pain to his character. I mean, his skin is being punctured.
But, also, for covers, artists jazz them up, too.

Matt Fraction is a really awesome writer. Immortal Iron Fist anyone? One thing I don't understand is why the latest arc of his Punisher War Journal is so horrendous. Well, I didn't particularly think the early issues were spectacular, but at least they were still fun to read. Might have something to with the new penciler and his god-awful art though.

I'm pretty sure he could just change his size anytime he wants. He's relatively normal sized most of the time. Also, if you didn't know, Gargan (Scorpion) is the new venom.

Going comic book shopping again tomorrow. Only have enough for 3 though. Gotta pick between these.
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY # 3
INVINCIBLE IRON MAN # 3
NOVA # 15
SECRET INVASION # 4
ULTIMATE ORIGINS # 2
The main deciding factor when buying comics for me is the art. I like looking at pretty pictures on paper. Otherwise, I just get caught up with the rest by downloading them. Nova is must. He's fighting Galactus so there should be tons of flashy shinny stuff all around. Same goes for Guardians. Space comics are always full of nice eye candy. I'm not that fond of Iron Man's art, but I'm in love with Matt Fraction. Secret Invasion has decent art and Nick furry will be badass, but I got a feeling nothing is going to happen again. Ultimate Origins was kind of a let down last time. I still have hope for it simply because it's supposed to reveal some big secret sometime though.
I might wind up buying that Thor comic too if the shop still has it.

But how are they gonna make Ant Man a movie that doesn't seem too 'out there'? I know they're setting up The Avengers by making movies with each team member and eventually cascade them into said movie.

There were two Avengers teams after civil war and cap's death. I guess the more "official and legit" team would be Mighty Avengers which has Iron Man, Ms Marvel, Ares, Wonder Man, Black Widow, Sentry, and Spider-Woman. The rogue Avengers team (New Avengers) has Wolverine, Spider-man, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Dr Strange (for a little while), and Ronin (Echo from DD). Spider-woman was with New avengers but changed sides right before Secret Invasion. With the invasion going on now, I'm pretty sure the lineups should be changing soon.

New Avengers are the non-registered unofficial team: Luke Cage, Ronin, the Sentry, Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, and Wolverine. Captain America was also on this team until he croaked.

Wow.
First Marvel goes with Jon Favreau for Iron Man and now it’s looking like another non-action/indie film director will come into the fold: Kenneth Branagh as the director for Thor.
The closest thing he’s directed to this would be Henry V almost 20 years ago, but he been directing other films since then.
Branagh also has a very long acting resume, having had a role in about 50 movies and TV episodes.
The movie version of Thor (a Norse god in Marvel Comics) has been written by Mark Protosevich. A source tells me that despite the fact that Variety says the screenplay will use the original version of the character, disabled medical student Don Blake who could turn into (or switch places with, I don’t remember exactly) the magic hammer-wielding Thor - the current screenplay does NOT include Blake as a character.
The film will be very heavy on Norse Mythology, Asgard (Thor’s home), mythical creatures, etc. Very Shakespearean in tone.
Personally I think this is a very interesting pick.

Seeing how they're using black Nick Fury, it's going to be based around Ultimates as well.

Marvel doesn't own the rights to the Spider-man movie franchise so I doubt Columbia would allow it. Would be awesome though.

No complaints there. I wonder if Marvel would be daring enough to go with a black Captain America...?
And speaking of the Cap, an alleged synopsis of the film has been revealed, nothing out of the ordinary. Still hoping that this movie will be comparable to Saving Private Ryan in terms of feel and action.
Synopsis:
"Born during the Great Depression, Steve Rogers grew up a frail youth in a poor family. Horrified by the newsreel footage of the Nazis in Europe, Rogers was inspired to enlist in the army. However, because of his frailty and sickness, he was rejected. Overhearing the boy's earnest plea, General Chester Phillips offered Rogers the opportunity to take part in a special experiment...Operation: Rebirth."
"After weeks of tests, Rogers was at last administered the 'Super-Soldier Serum' and bombarded by 'vita-rays.' Steve Rogers emerged from the treatment with a body as perfect as a body can be and still be human. Rogers was then put through an intensive physical and tactical training program. Three months later, he was given his first assignment as Captain America. Armed with his indestructible shield and and battle savvy, Captain America has continued his war against evil both as a sentinel of liberty and leader of the Avengers."

My thoughts exactly.
Just read that Daniel Craig was approached to play Thor, but turned it down.
Meh, I don't think he'd be a good Thor anyway.

Her last name is Sackhoff so I don't think she is from up there.

Wow, I just Peter David's run of Captain Marvel. I never though much of it because Captain Marvel is C-list at most (even though he has some hax powers), but it turned out to be one of my new favorite titles. Too bad it got canned pretty early.
