who cares why is this bad
Mr. Mendelson and other consumer representatives argue that the science backing the F.D.A.’s decision is shaky and that consumer surveys show that most people are opposed to cloning animals, let alone eating them. Some also said that cloning causes harm to the animals involved and could pave the way for human cloning.
If that's the best the opposition can come up with I say send in the clones

it isn't, just thought it would bring some moral arguments about it, idk
besides, it's not like there are enough cows for everyone
especially africans

Actually I am predicting a "I Am Legend" type scenario with this. Like scientists come out and there all like OMG we are saving the world nobody goes hungry! and then a few years later they are like oops we made a mistake but its too late so you are all dead.
Common sense tells me that cloned organisms are made out of the same stuff as regular ones, but it still seems super shady, and I rather not eat them.
edit: Its not like Africa would get this food anyways.

That's because you're being illogical and juvenile.
TojesDolan
01-16-2008, 06:01 PM
Well, if the organisms are being cloned it's supposed to be the same as it's copied organism, so probably no big issue, especially considering things must be stable after like, 10 years of research.
Besides, it's not as fucked up as using clembuterol on farm animals to make them fatter; As long as they don't try something idiotic like cloning hyper-fast-growing specimens I think things will be alright.
Damn geneticists.

Why would I eat a cloned animal when I can be awesome and shoot my own. That way, I don't get all the bad stuff that actually is put into meat sold in stores.
I don't though.

Yeah...I'm gonna go ahead and NOT base my political beliefs on a hollywood movie. :p
I'm not opposed to this, although I'm also not entirely sure what the benefit would be... Cloned animals still need to be grown and birthed...does it really save that much time to skip the copulation?

works the same as plants, ted: you get softer-meated, stronger-built, faster-growing animals, or get a certain breed of an animal without worrying about a horny bull fucking around with his ladies

I hope you're talking about the I Am Legend part...not the part where Africans wont get their food
There's enough food for them now...its just that they wont get it because they have oppressive governments, and they cant pay for it.

Well, that's cool...but what about the whole feeding starving African children thing? I'm sure they don't give a crap whether the meat is tender or not.

Half of the people arguing about this wont even know what a telomere is, let alone the more important details of the ethical arguments.
I don't see this feeding any africans any time soon, though. Surprisingly it's cheaper to get a hillbilly to launch a bull into a cow than it is for the process to begin in a lab. Cloned animals are incredibly expensive.
What it will do is pave the way for such things as hormones in milk to help g.disease sufferers.

Of course not. Meat is only for us civilised people.

a cloned animal is not a natural animal and you can eat that shi all you want

Common sense is, well, common.
Actually, cloning isn’t new at all. In fact, we eat clones all the time, in the form of bananas and grafted fruits. We’ve been cloning plants for decades, except that we refer to it as “vegetative propagation.” It takes about 30 years to breed a banana from seed, so, to speed the process of getting fruit to market, most bananas, potatoes, apples, grapes, pears, and peaches are clones.

i think it's called clenbuterol. and if you feed it to animals it shouldn't fatten them up. clenbuterol is a weight loss pill.
edit:
here's an interesting article about pork and clenbuterol.

I've read that and the point is, clenbuterol (forgive the spelling error) is used in animals to gain fat quicker.
It is also a non-steroidal anabolic and metabolism accelerator, through a mechanism not well understood. Its ability to induce weight loss and a greater proportion of muscle to fat makes its illegal use in livestock popular.
so basically, it makes them bigger in a shorter time
Futue te Ipsum
01-18-2008, 05:46 AM
By the looks of that, it appears as though its use is to build up muscle on the animals.

Well... hmm... I don't know, if you were Hindu would you eat a cow if it was cloned?
I'd eat them if there were shown to be no harmful side effects. I mean, it would also depend on the cloning type-- not that sci- fi laser scan and... meat-- but if it was just an animal raised off of the DNA of a living creature, it'd be just another animal.
i'm hindu and i would a cow if it was cloned or even if it wasn't cloned just SHOW ME WHERE DA BEEF AT nomnomnom

If they could operate machinery they would be smart enough to notice that they are killing their own species en masse.
They would revolt.
