what are some good bands kind that kind of fit this description?
I'm just looking for chill kind of stuff that focuses on instruments such as acoustic guitar, maybe some violin and banjo, whistling, soft vocals, whatever; it doesn't have to meet all the criteria.
think bands like old crow medicine show, andrew bird, moldy peaches, iron & wine, and everything in between.
thanks for the help

indie isnt a genre
indie wasn't originally a genre, and in one meaning of the term still isn't, but face it, the word "indie" now represents a certain range and style of music whether you like it or not.
there are lots of independent bands out there, at one point EVERY band is at one point independent (with the exception of "bands" that get created and immediately marketed i.e. boy bands, random teen bands that the disney channel makes, american idol people, etc).
With that being said, I wouldn't consider my little brothers little BS emo/metal band indie, would you? Or how about the man on the street corner playing his beat up acoustic guitar and singing about the blues, would you call him indie? It can be said that both musicians are independently making music, but that doesn't make them an indie band in todays meaning of the word.
I think I've proven my point, and with that being said, go troll somewhere else unless you are going to contribute.
Oh shut up about what indie is and isn't. No one made you the president of Indiea.

president of Indiea.
I see what you did there
the man on the street corner playing his beat up acoustic guitar and singing about the blues is the penultimate indie kid

penultimate is such an epic word

Maybe download the song "You Ever Get Punched In The Face For Talking Too Much?" by Look Mexico. The band and the album itself isn't really an indie folk thing, but that one song is.
Look Mexico would be a lot better if the singer didn't sound like a total cunt.

His voice can get a little annoying sometimes, but I still enjoy them.
He kind of reminds me of a lot of different pop-punk vocalists.

Sounds like you are after Six Organs of Admittance. School of the Flower is an easy one to start with. I also endorse okay's statement that indie is not a genre. Hate me, indie fans.

There is also this band that I like a lot called Farewell Finito; However, they only have a few songs on myspace... the rest of their stuff is on itunes under the name Through Snowy Static. I definitely think you should check them out though.

I've found them on soulseek. And if you want to cough up money you can get them on iTunes I think.
