Anyone remember the Phantom? I think that's what it was called. It was the console that let you download any game from any system. I remember hearing about it, then watching it on G4 a long time ago.

Even the hosts were skeptical and not sucking up like they usually do.

I can accept you not thinking highly of the PS3, but using it as the starter for this topic is just ****ing stupid.

I saw Virtual Boy mentioned, which is a much better thought.
The Gamecube was pretty lame too I would say, but not to the point of absurdity.

The problem with giving the GameCube or the PS3 that title is that they have a shitload of commercial success.

The major true failure in recent years is not Gamecube or PS3, it's the N-Gage and the Phantom.

Well, I personally would split 'worst platform' into two catagories.

Simply Horrid, for which Virtual Boy gets my vote; and the worst main-stream, that is to say, a system that while moderately successful, failed to a)meet expectations and b)perform optimally against the competition of its generation of systems, for which I would say the Gamecube or maybe the Dreamcast.

The PS3 I consider ineligible for this distinction for many reasons, least of all because I have one, and love it, but I won't use that to support me.
What I will use is that its too ****ing early to make that call.
a) Sales have picked up remarkably, and I have read multiple projections that say it will probably be the top selling of the big three (PS3, 360, Wii) within a year, two at the most.
b) The PS3 has HARDLY seen games come out that can make full use of its potential capacity. As I pointed out in the PS3 v 360 thread, right now they are comparable, so 360, being cheaper, seems better. But once the difference in game quality afforded by using Blu-ray as opposed to DVD becomes apparent, 360 is going to start lagging behind considerably. TS is simply an idiot and (I would guess) a 360 fanboy (not that the two have to go hand in hand, there are idiot PS3 fanboys too... I merely mean that they stump for their system of choice but couldn't tell you why it's better).

How exactly did the Gamecube not meet expectations? It's a Nintendo system and Nintendo has been behind Sony since the Playstation was conceived and they've been well behind Microsoft since they started producing consoles. It's not like anyone expected them to beat the competition in a visual/gameplay competition. The Wii isn't going to last any longer than the Gamecube did tbh because Nintendo just isn't a front runner anymore.

The N-gage wins, because Phantom didn't exist enough to even count.

Thats exactly what I mean though.

Nintendo had the lead back in the days of NES and SNES. The N64, although losing ground to Sony, was still great, and almost anyone who was a kid in the 90's must have a few fond memories of it.
The Gamecube was released as Nintendo's hope to regain the ground it lost to Sony, and it failed to do so. I agree few people expected them to actually do that, but it was the forlorn hope that they held.

The N-Gage's biggest failure probably wasn't even related to gameplay, it was the fact that to use in as a phone you had you hold it in such a ridiculous way.

Haha yep.

"It consumed much more power - nearly two times more - than the Sega Game Gear. Six alkaline AA batteries offered only about 2 hours (depending on volume and screen brightness settings) of play time, making batteries a significant expense for use on the go."

Anyone who is citing any of this generations systems clearly aren't thinking straight. As mentioned it's still too early to call it, but as much as some of you don't want to hear it Wii IS the best selling system currently.

People who have been mentioning Virtual Boy and N-Gage are using their noodles and actually citing a dead platform that failed from launch. I might also be halfway tempted to say the 3DO, just to add something new to the mix.

Game Gear was far from a failure.

Sega CD was hilariously bad.

3DO failed to pick up because it was as expensive as the PS3 on launch.

3DO also lacked library, I was going to also mention Sega CD, but switched it out for 3DO, I`m glad someone else mentioned it.

EDIT:

I should mention that the 3DO`s library is probably a direct result of it`s weak sales.

and the combination 32X CD games? the 4 games (i think thats all that were made for it) that came out were pretty bad.

all the genesis add-ons were just sega's attempt at stalling until the world was ready for the Saturn.
