isn't the golden rule "do unto others..."?
Reaganista
01-13-2008, 05:14 PM
my posters said **** like 'you can't suceed if you dont try' or 'hang in there' and had like a picture of some animal hanging on to something
those kinda made me sad because i was left to assume that the animal eventually fell and rather than save him some asshole just took a picture

but in a way its sorta true i mean think about it if everyone treated eachother how one would like to be treated there would literally be no problems so yeah it is a golden rule

There would still be problems because people don't all wanted to be treated the same
Pretty stupid rule tbh

Its not a stupid rule. You guys are taking it to seriously. How is it a bad thing to think about your actions and think about if you would want what you are about to do done to you (mmmm tongue twister).

wow, you people have too much time on your hands. its a great rule if you use it in its simplest form.

"be nice to other people" is a much better, simpler, meaningfull and overall less shitty rule

The rule is simply based on being empathetic, which is very important.

and the foundation of morality (at least the morals that make sense)
not really.
guitrguy
01-14-2008, 02:38 PM
how is not? Disagreeing with morality I can see, but morals in general where formed from the empathy. Religion like to say its god, but the just a rationalization, and an attempt to make it absolute. Notice I did not say all.

01-14-2008, 02:40 PM
because it's stupid
guitrguy
01-14-2008, 02:46 PM
I wasn't making a judgment, or claiming absolute. There is a connection between empathy and morality.
No matter what moral code you look at. A vast majority has to came from empathy.

When Tway said "Not really." it might have been ambiguous.
The better response to it would be

Ok.
The majority of moral codes base themselves in things other than empathy.
Now you go.

I will continue when you actually explain it. I understand your assertion, but not your reasoning.
PerpetualBurn
01-15-2008, 10:22 AM
My reason is that if you counted all the moral codes based on things other than empathy then it would exceed the list of moral codes based on empathy.
guitrguy
01-15-2008, 10:25 AM
If you count the common morality in other moral codes once, yes. The thing is of it repeats its a sign of where the functional morality is really coming from. If you count ever empathetic moral per moral code then you see a number outweighing that of the nonsensical morals.

Count the morals including repeats, and the empathetic morals are more numerous then the nonsensical morals.
