Are you still going to Earth?

Bukowski
01-12-2008, 05:03 PM
yeah i am, already got the ticket.

what about you?

Neoteric
01-12-2008, 05:04 PM
I am going, my friend bought two tickets today for us.

Where the hell is the Stereo btw?

Bukowski

nice one

It's right in the centre of town, but it's REALLY hard to find. Me and my friend had no idea where it was when we went to see Liars there, and I kept asking people but nobody had heard of it. Finally found out where it was when I asked a bouncer at The Arches. Almost missed Liars coming on. Lesson learnt -- never try finding a venue on the night of a gig.

OK I'll try and remember. From central station, you head up towards the old Odeon Cinema that got shut down (on Renfield Street). You come to a borderline strip-club called Play (never been ;)) and it's the first alleyway on your left, called Renfield Lane. I would never have known it if I hadn't seen the massive amount of indiekid-stereotypes standing outside smoking.

It's a cool venue, apart from the pillars. Pillars at a music venue = crap. I know they might be necessary to support the building and everything, but it should be designed otherwise. Barfly, Stereo and the Liquid Room in Edinburgh are all main offenders. Firewater too but only local bands play there.

I'm pretty excited, and looking forward to Sir Richard Bishop supporting as well.

Sweet, I'll take note.

If you see me, then come up and say hi. :)

I'll be the kid with blonde hair and glasses, not to mention I'll probably be the youngest there.

Bukowski
01-12-2008, 05:42 PM
Yeah, I can't imagine many more under-17s in Scotland know that Earth even exist :p

If I see someone even remotely like that, I'll say hi and hope it's you and not just some random guy which would be kinda embarassing, but also pretty funny.

Are you going to Explosions in the Sky and Eluvium?

Neoteric
01-12-2008, 05:46 PM
Just go up to them and say "NEOOOOOOOOOO"...

and if they don't say "sup" then it's probably not me haha.

Yeah, I'm going to Explosions as well. I'm more looking forward to Eluvium though, since I listen to him way more than Explosions.

Bukowski
01-12-2008, 05:54 PM
lol

I am gonna try for tickets to that, but I think it's sold out.

Neoteric
01-12-2008, 05:57 PM
I don't think it's sold out.

It's also about two weeks away so hurry up and get a ticket. :)

Though I forget you live near the ticket place.

See Sir Richard Bishop live, is it like, things from his album (which is improvised mostly) or is he just gonna jam on his guitar for his set? I'm really unsure about that, I know Earth will mostly play stuff from the new album though.

Bordello
01-12-2008, 05:58 PM
It's usually a mix of improvised crap and songs.

Neoteric
01-12-2008, 05:59 PM
Oh.

Still looking forward to see what he does though.

Bordello
01-12-2008, 06:00 PM
I've heard a few live things where he sings. Sometimes it's good and sometimes it's bad.

Bukowski
01-12-2008, 06:03 PM
I'd expect it to be mostly improvised. I don't know much about guitar, but he sounds like one of the most talented guitarists I've ever heard. And with the Sun City Girls as well, he was technically gifted, and at the same time really unique and creative. It's a shame that someone as good as him is basically unknown even to most music fans, whereas Pete Doherty...

but yeah, it'll be mostly improvisation.

Neoteric
01-12-2008, 06:06 PM
Yeah, he's a beast at the guitar. Plus I doubt the general public would like him hah.

Earth should be cool as long as there is a good crowd. Cause it's not like you could move to their music.

Bordello
01-12-2008, 06:07 PM
What? I bump 'n' grind to Earth all the time.

Neoteric
01-12-2008, 06:09 PM
Video it plz, it would be pretty hilarious.

I'm just saying that generally when you can't move about to a band live, it's usually the atmosphere and the crowd that make up for it.

Bordello
01-12-2008, 06:10 PM
The only movement should be the subtle stroke of your chin.

Bukowski
01-12-2008, 06:11 PM
It's a nice small venue, and pretty compact (shame about the pillars tho). I think there'll be lots of long-haired metalheads there, with their Mastodon and Black Sabbath t-shirts. And then there'll be people like us. Should be interesting.

That was what Sunn o))) was like anyway.

Neoteric
01-12-2008, 06:15 PM
I could imagine that. At Sonic Youth, it was kind of a mix of older people who listened to them in the 80's, students and then you got the little Nirvana grunge kiddies.

Bordello
01-12-2008, 06:15 PM
If you speed up Sunn songs, they actually sound pretty normal.

Neoteric
01-12-2008, 06:17 PM
I want to speed up Earth songs and see what they sound like.

The night I tried to find the Echoplex in LA was hilarious. It ended up being in an alley behind Dodger's Stadium, but inside it had columns and ****. Neat place.

Europe always gets the good shows....

More good bands should come to lolhio.

I'm seeing Om and Lichens next week. It will be surreal.

Bordello
01-12-2008, 06:24 PM
That would be a good show, even though Lichens is/are kind of boring.

Anxious
01-12-2008, 06:26 PM
Yeah its just okay, I prefer his band 90 Day Men.

Him opening for Om though is perfect.

Bordello
01-12-2008, 06:27 PM
He should supply sounds while Om are playing. That would be cooler.

Anxious
01-12-2008, 06:28 PM
His latest album is called "Omns" after all.

If they don't play "At Giza" I will be very disappointed.

Bordello
01-12-2008, 06:30 PM
I would love to see them play "Bhima's Theme" live.

Bukowski
01-12-2008, 06:31 PM
I'm extremely jealous of you seeing Om.

Your last.fm gig list looks pretty good. I don't think the Black Lips EVER stop touring. And you've got Acid Mothers and the Meat Puppets to look forward to as well.

Anxious
01-12-2008, 06:32 PM
I've seen the Black Lips before in the same small venue just a few months ago. At least 2/3 of the audience was totally wasted and going on stage singing "Oh Katrina".

I'm pretty pumped for both AMT and Meat Puppets but the thing is that the Boredoms are playing the same night as AMT...I'm probably going to opt for them.

Bordello
01-12-2008, 06:34 PM
AMT would be awesome live.

Have Boredoms released that 77 drummer DVD yet?

I really wish Earthless would tour. They seem like a band that would be ten times more awesome live.

Bukowski
01-12-2008, 06:38 PM
I had a similar problem, except it was Mono and Jesu on the same night as AMT.

Also, last year I had to choose between Don Caballero and Bardo Pond. Hated missing Bardo Pond, but I wasn't really that familiar with them at the time.

I've seen the Boredoms, and they are spectacular live. I've never seen any show like it, three exceptionally talented drummers playing in a circle with Eye in the middle going nuts. It was the "fullest" sounding gig I've ever experienced, really unbelievable. AMT are probably great live as well though. Tough decision.

Anxious
01-12-2008, 06:40 PM
AMT always tour though and Boredoms almost never come to the west coast.

Bukowski and Elim, you have 6 months to arrange to go to this:

http://www.terrascope.co.uk/Terrastock7/Terrastock7_performers.htm

I'll see you there.

Bordello
01-12-2008, 06:43 PM
I'm going to try to go to that. Hopefully I'll have my license or something by then.

I'm not sure, have you seen some of the videos on youtube though? It's pretty outstanding. So many excellent bands were represented there as well...the fact that Brian Chippendale (Lightning Bolt, Mindflayer), David Grubbs and Sara Lund (Unwound) were involved is enough to make me really want to buy it.

Bordello
01-12-2008, 06:47 PM
When all of them lock into one groove, it's amazing. Just imagine how awesome it would have been standing right there. For free.

That would be mind-blowing. Me and a friend were planning to do some sorta road trip across America in the summer...we could stop off at that on the road west.

I'm actually gonna see MV + EE at a local festival next month. Richard Youngs is playing as well :)

Bordello
01-12-2008, 06:53 PM
Awesome.

I want to see Lightning Bolt really badly too. One of my friends went and he couldn't hear for like a week.

Bukowski
01-12-2008, 06:58 PM
Yeah, I'd love to see Lightning Bolt. The last time they played here I was too young to get in. That was a real downer. I think Brian Chippendale is basically deaf... they're supposed to be insanely loud.

I honestly think the loudest band I've ever seen was Dinosaur Jr. J's guitar solos just melted my brain.

Neoteric
01-13-2008, 05:46 AM
The loudest gig I've been too was probably the Melvins one but that's because all the other bands I've seen live are quiet pussies.

I would kill to see Lightning Bolt.

They also played with Flipper, probably my favourite show.

AlienEater

****

that would be an un****ingbelievable show

****, if they played in scotland they must have played here. ****. how did I manage to miss that?

Yeah they played London on 11th December 2006.

AlienEater

The Melvins weren't that loud when i saw them.

Neoteric

I couldn't hear when I came out.

Bukowski
01-13-2008, 01:20 PM
Melvins were definitely loud when they played here, and that was a great show. I actually considered going to see them in London because I really wanted to see Flipper, but I thought they were only supporting in London and not the rest of the UK dates. Luckily I found out they were supporting in Glasgow as well before I arranged all that.

Om interview plus a little bit of live footage- http://www.amoeba.com/video-player/om.html

They certainly LOOK like the kind of guys who'd be involved in an album called Dopesmoker.
