Finite resources are a reality. We know it best with oil, but all resources that are not replenishable will eventually cease to be available.

So, what's in the future concerning this? Will we continue to find new uses for different, currently unused compounds? Or will we reach the point of having to (and being able to) synthetically generate these resources?

The supernations of the world'll have to stop being excessive and lead by example instead of the current tact of making excuses for not signing protocols :p.

Corporate and governmental Stewardship is the answer; realising that if you're doing something to change it, rather than make excuses.

^ I think it will, where neccesary, however people will change their opinions of what they need so rather than suplimenting current resource consumption, they'll reduce their impact first and then introduce synthetically generated products. I think in the next few years we'll see a trend of people assessing what they need and consuming less in modernised countries.
