Since this is the place to post news, this is going on right this minute:

A tornado touched down in North Vancouver just after noon Thursday and than began moving to the northeast.

So far, no injuries have been reported but authorities have confirmed the tornado sighting.

Several people have also called KGW to report seeing it. They also reported extreme weather conditions including hail and dark clouds.

Scanner traffic shows police are monitorring reports of trees and power lines down.

KGW Meteorologist Dave Salesky is tracking the funnel clouds on Doppler 8000 radar. He said the storm system is moving 30 miles an hour across parts of northern Clark County. A funnel cloud is a twister that is not touching the ground.

Tornado warnings were issued by the National Weather Service for both Clark County and Skamania County. But just before 1 a.m., the Clark County warning was cancelled.

More to come…

Being in Portland, this is very, very close to where I am. The weather here has been strange lately and there's some concern over whether or not we could get hit next. We've had winds the past week in excess of 90 mph, heavy rain, low air pressure, and ominous skies. I just hope everyone is smart across the river and no one gets hurt while this is going on.

EDIT: Since no one seems to know anything about the geography of their own country or the history of NW weather, this is a very big deal. The last tornado we had here was in 1972. Being on the west side of the rockies and especially being in the middle of the Columbia Gorge, tornadoes are a rarity.

The fact that this one is possibly being bumped up to either an F3 or an F4 is remarkable. Also, the presence of several other funnel clouds during the storm was something that doesn't happen here, ever.

Now there are several reports of funnel clouds in SE Portland. This is about 10-15 minutes from where I live.

I thought this thread would get more attention since this is actually a huge deal. We don't get tornadoes here and now we're getting bombarded by them out of nowhere. The last time we had a tornado in the NW was in the early 70's.

It would have helped to say that first. My knowledge of climatological tendencies around the world is a bit rusty these days.

The weather in Seattle's been pretty typically northwest.

On a side note I want to move Seattle partly for the weather.

They originally labeled it as either an F0 or an F1 but they've been assessing the damage and it will likely be upgraded to either an F3 or an F4.

If you don't care then don't post. Don't waste my time by making me read an idiot post like that.

Go huff some Raid.

To those with a working brain, I'll keep updating this as necessary. This is history in the making.

Yeah, over at Mt. Hood Community College (which is in East Gresham, towards Troutdale), we got a massive hailstorm, the worst I"ve ever seen in my 21 years living in Oregon. The school is only about 3-4 miles south of Camas, which is directly to the east of Vancouver. Pretty intense stuff.

One of my classmates was looking at something on her cell phone and spoke of a tornado warning.

The funny thing is, I remember at my brother's first marching band competition way back in October 1998, which took place at Evergreen High School (which is in Vancouver) there was sightings of cyclones and a tornado warning for the Vancouver area. So this is nothing new.

Yeah we got hit with heavy hail here in Portland, too. The ice chunks were the size of marbles.

I don't remember hearing about that. They didn't mention it on any of the news stations either. Everyone says this is the first one since 1972.

So are people there actually taking precautions? Could be pretty dangerous if they don't actually know what to do in a tornado.

Yeah everyone acted pretty well when it happened. Not everyone could get indoors but those that were outside headed for the nearest store/gas station/bridge and took cover. There were a lot of people that got stuck outside but so far no deaths have been reported.

One house on the edge of Lake Vancouver was torn completely apart. All that was left was the foundation.

We're still on watch, especially since we've had funnel cloud sightings here in Portland too, but things seem to be clearing up. There's a big thunderstorm cell above Gresham and another one moving over Lake Oswego, but everyone is keeping an eye out for any possible rotation and if anything else develops we'll hopefully have more of a warning.

I'm not looking forward to tornado season again. Last year was kinda bad.

Do you have a basement?

J Rad
01-10-2008, 06:53 PM
Yep. I also have a "special" room that I built down there. It's probably the most durable room in the house, so it serves a second purpose now as a storm shelter.

I work in Vancouver and was watching for anything. Apparently two tornadoes touched down.

Every now and then we get a tiny tornado that lasts a few seconds in the northwest, but it's rare. The one you're thinking of Jared, in 1972, was the last big tornado we had.

J Rad

Yeah you're right, Seth. They were saying later that we've had some very tiny twisters in Albany and shi but this is the most destructive one we've had since '72.
