View Full Version : What's with the overaggression?

I like to consider myself to be very well rounded and I try to look at a particular situation from all points of view. Even if I don't agree with a certain view I will at least look into it so I can gain a basic idea myself on what it's all about. And it makes me wonder why when I go on an atheist website I always see christian fundamentalists damning all those who disagree with the views of Christianity. Like verbatim, if one goes on an atheist website you can be sure to see somebody of an opposing side not only stating that they oppose the atheist view but slamming the atheists for their views. I myself am a christain and I don't care to bash the atheist views even though I don't agree with them. On the other hand, whenever I go to research a christian religion and I find one of their websites I always see athiests slamming them the same exact way if not harder for their beliefs.
And even if it doesn't have to do with religion. Even if we are just on the forums as we are now, I continue to see people not trying to win the other people over with their way of thinking but they try to rip the other side down by trying to prove themselves totally right and the other side totally wrong. It seems to me that some people look for these kind of forums just to tear others down. Not to change a way of thinking but just to rip apart other's arguments.
So my question is this:
Why do some feel the need to take other's views and mock and humiliate them while overlyaggressing their own views. Do many not see that a simple debate will surfice instead of trying to be a complete winner where everyone else who opposes them is wrong. I always found this to be interesting and I wanted to hear other's thoughts.

Internet or not, most people argue dogmatically with no interest in changing their opinions or gaining perspective.
But not everyone is like that. You can level with a couple of people around here.

To answer your question, these groups are fundamentally opposed-it seems they cant live happily with one another because not only are they differing beliefs, they are in opposition to each other's core foundation. I dont see why they can't hold a simple debate without ad hominem arguments, though.

It's like that even irl, to be honest. It's not just an internet problem. Besides, that issue was around long before the internet existed.

Well, IRL I like to play devils advocate.... thats why I did debate team in HS, but I don't try to "mock and humiliate."

There are those who do go out of thier way to mock and humiliate though....on both sides. I feel the "Christian" aggressors are for more self righteous and hateful in thier attack, tbh though.

I propose that Steve gets a 3 day ban every time he tries to act like he's a moderate

Steve must have a very fundamentalist approach to being a moderate.
Or something.

Most of the debates we have here are debates where I have established my views pretty strongly. I debate, but I don't really think I can change peoples minds. Its usually just somebody else saying "you make a good point, but...", and thats ok with me. Most of the debate I get into here revolves around the election, and I am a pretty well established Paulite.

I can't say there's anyone worth your time on here who goes about things like you've said. In general this forum is more or less for debating or discuss our views on matters. So if I don't agree with Steve because he's a total ****ing moron and I have the ability to prove it, then how am I being agressive? I'm just pointing out what I believe. The alternative is letting everyone go about their business without any persecution (Strong word, hmm, what else could work there?) and thats not going to result in a helluva' lot is it?
This goes on in real life too buddy, not just on forums.
Also I like how your first statement more or less does what you're saying you're against. You suddenly use Christian Fundementalists with their "attacks" against Atheism. To be honest I can't say I've ever really seen any of these such attacks, and regardless there are just as many Atheist "attacks" against Christianity and its "false" claims.

I was talking about non-internet. Though I know. Which is more or less proven by the fact that TS did it himself right here.
Its because the internet is full of a lot of people who are convinced they're right just because the Bible lies. I dunno' its just so ****ing annoying reading "YEAH BUT EXPLAIN THE CRUSADES!!!! HUH YEAH!! EXPLAIN THAT!!!" over and over and over again.

There can NEVER been an appropriate level of aressiveness to idiots. Idiots deserve as much possible agressiveness as..well..possible.
