well first i guess you need a program that can recieve the controller, like Propellerhead Reason,

i have no idea how cubase works but im guessing theres a way to detect the controller. So go to prefernces im thiking and there should about detecting your midi controller. Once you do that, you cant just play the notes and expect a sound, you have to open up a program and patch that you wantt to use within the keyboard, thats for REASON though, not cubase, i have no idea how cubase works

you can't record midi data into audacity because audacity doesn't support midi capturing and it doesn't support vsts. frankly, if you're at all interested in making nice music you shouldn't even be touching audacity.

all professional DAWs (digital audio workstations - ableton live, cubase, sonar, etc) will be able to capture the midi data you input, and send that to a plugin that will translate the midi data into sound.

why don't you want to use reason?
