So I was driving around a friend of a friend who tried to tell me Minus the Bear was a math rock band. I knew it wasn't, but when I tried to give her examples of real math rock, the only band I could think of was Drive Like Jehu. Can someone give me some other math rock bands for me to check out so I will be able to educate the masses?

I've heard Don Caballero called math rock a lot. I could never really get into this genre though so I don't know too many bands.

One of my friends makes a distinction between "math rock" and "brutal prog" (which I guess is what he says Yowie is, for example). I think the latter term is hilarious.
EDIT: I just googled it, and was reminded that he told me once that brutal prog is a term coined by the Flying Luttenbachers.
Silly

Despite the fact that I've only listened to one record of their's, Don Cab is the first band I think of when I hear the term "math rock."
Battles probably second, but I can't say I know too much on the subject.

I'm not really an expert, but to the extent of my knowledge it's pretty intense progressive music with a lot of odd time signatures and very calculated rhythms. I think its a form of post-hardcore

Minus the bear are mostly called math cause their guitarist used to be in botch, who were math metal pioneers. Their actual music isnt very mathy or off kilter though.

I wouldn't mind calling Ruins brutal prog in public.
Math rock would be derogatory.

He was like reminiscing with his friend about how he introduced him to faraquet when they used to live together. His friend was like "guess who introduced me to faraquet. he's standing directly to your left."
It was touching.

^Cinemechanica is mathcore
they have alot of video game cover bands if you are interested;
The Advantage, another band which plays covers of Nintendo theme music.
The Minibosses, one of the very first game-music cover bands, focusing mainly on NES tunes.
The Black Mages, a metal band founded by Nobuo Uematsu to play Final Fantasy arrangements.
The OneUps, covers of video game music with a more jazz-inspired sound.
The NESkimos, covers of Nintendo music, but adds a very heavy style to it.
MegaDriver, covers of video game music, mostly of the Sega Genesis (or "Mega Drive" outside North America) but also plays Nintendo covers, with a heavy metal style.
PRESS PLAY ON TAPE, Commodore 64 tunes as rock.

wtf?
What would would compel someone to wake up one morning and say "hey! I'm gonna make the first Sega cover band! That would be a good idea"
Some Final Fantasy games had good music, but doing a mathrock cover would absolutely ruin it.
