one of the coolest drum tracks ever by one of the coolest drummers. so i decided i had to learn it and, now that i know it, i wanted to teach it.

it's actually quite easy. once you break it down.

here's the lesson.

He is so stoned in that. Cool groove, I have it slated to work on tomorow.

that was really cool. although the beat is really easy its actually quite awesome and you break it down really well.

very cool. i wish my hat chick and stick sounds were more similar. i've yet to experiment with hand/foot on the hats.

your photo still reminds me of alton brown

Your kit doesn't sound quite right for it imo but it's still good.

Also, I see you're reading it out of Rhythm magazine...CHEAT!! :p

Good stuff though man.

This isn't really advanced section stuff, groovy nonetheless though.

No...he kicked his habit in the mid 90's or so. He was pretty much high throughout the 70's and 80's, though, which was why Paul Simon stopped working with him during the 80's. Damn shame, really...nice to see him sober again.

that's reassuring. thanks. drugs are really no good to a drumming career, even one as illustrious as gadd's.

Well...I do believe that Cocaine helped him track the ridiculous amount of records that he recorded during the 70's, but it also contributed to his looking 20 years older than he actually is. :(

This groove is a blast to play.

I was playing this groove earily today actually.
I didn't watch the vid due to my connection speed but does Gadd play the hihat with his foot at all? Coz I've seen a few different notations.

unfortunately this site doesn't allow picture attachments. the notation for the groove is here:

the hihat foot is fundamental to the groove.

Nice work on this Jason. I've seen so many transcriptions of this groove that don't take into account the footwork with the hi-hat, just notating it with hands only.

Yeah, alternating btwn hand hi-hat and foot hi-hat strokes is fundamental to Gadd's signature style.

Not going to lie, though...I totally rip it off in my own playing. :D

cool, now I can play this groove correctly. I'm a bit suprised that a book as good as Advanced Funk Studies wouldn't transcribe it properly.

I'm not sure of it being used much anyway but would you say that the hi hat chicks are being used less in groove playing nowadays and more just to keep time?

Truthfully, I don't think alot of guys got into using the hi-hat that way, other than Gadd. Ever seen the way he uses it to play shuffles?

lol...Yup, I remember that very problem came up in my lessons a godawful long time ago. Funk studies has some good stuff but you have to keep in mind that everything is limited by the quality of the listener's ear, and subtleties like that can be tough to pick up on without knowing about them beforehand.

Of course, the fact that he would goof up such a signature groove... Oh well.

Some people do it. Donati does it all of the time, as does Andy Edwards. It's really common to use the hi-hat foot in conjunction with the ride cymbal in jazz; aside from the obvious 2+4, there's a whole strain of playing outlined in Riley's beyond bop drumming where players will play more complex counterpoints on their left foot. Bruford actually does some really sick **** with his left foot...check out the 12/8 section of "One More Red Nightmare" by King Crimson or any of his Earthworks jazz stuff e.g. Footloose and Fancy Free.
