Hey,

Tony Williams is one of the greats that I have heard nothing from and I'm sure I'm missing out. Could you recommend any albums that showcase his talent.

Cheers

well before people hop in this thread and just start listing every tony williams album they have heard of, I'll give you two:

"Empyrean Isles" - Herbie Hancock
"Angel Street" - Tony Williams

I think listening to these two would be a really good start. The second one is from the 80's but it's pretty straight-ahead swing with some drum features. The first is from the 60's and has some pretty free stuff in there. It's one of my favorite albums of all time.

I have Tony Williams - Lifetime.

Not to be confused with his fusion band he created later....it was an album he released under his own name when he was like 19 or something. It's a kinda avant-garde jazz album. I'll be honest, I don't dig it all that much. It's quite a deep piece to get into. Is a very muso sort of album - all about the colour and atmosphere etc etc

I personally am in love with Canteloupe Island by Herbie Hancock. Great album featuring Tony on drums. Nothing immensely blinding but it's a great listen nonetheless.

Check out "Trio of Doom," if you can.

It features John McLaughlin on guitar and Jaco Pastorius on bass, some pretty cool stuff there. I'm considering uploading it next week, if you're on the list.

That sounds sick...can I get in on it?

Anyways, I've always been a fan of Tony's work with Miles Davis. I would definitetly recommend checking out the full In a Silent Way sessions...some absolutely amazing playing on those. ESP is absoutely killer as well...probably one of my most overplayed CDs.

cheers guys, I'll try get some of the albums you mentioned.

The Trio of Doom sounds like a good upload, I've got the album 'after the rain' John McLaughlin did with Elvin Jones and that one was nice.

Maiden Voyage By Herbie Hancock has some excellent work by him, great album as well. Much more relaxed and jazzy then his later stuff.

The Trio of Doom recordings were a huge disappointment for me. They quality was terrible and I really do think that at that point in their individual careers, each was too big to be in a band together. It's good, just not as good as you would think.

Cantaloupe Island, the album mentioned above, is a compilation album. That song has to be listened to with the rest of the "Empyrean Isles" album (it is, after all, a concept album). It also has songs off of Herbie's album "My Point of View", which is nothing special, especially coming from Tony... very tame, not really a good representation of Tony.

I definitely agree with the Maiden Voyage recommendation though. It's a little less free than Empyrean Isles, so maybe you'll like it better if you haven't listened to much jazz.

His "Lifetime" album mentioned above is super free and is one that you'd probably need to ease into. But it's a really great album if you can listen to it.
