View Full Version : Tremolo/string changing tips?

Since I couldn't make the thread title any more ambiguous, let me explain. In some songs there are tremolo or fast-picking/plucking parts where you'll focus on one string but then hit another one it for maybe a note. Some examples include this snippet from "The Decline" by NOFX, which is used with a pick:

edit: apparently I'm an idiot and can't get the tab code to work

# 3:07 # |(second time without last note)
G-|----14|----14|----14|---------------||----16|----16|----16|---------------|
D-|1212--|1111--|1010--|5-----5-----5--||1414--|1313--|1212--|7-----7-----7--|
A-|------|------|------|---5-----5----5||------|------|------|---7-----7----7|
E-|--5X--|--5X--|--5X--|---------------||--5X--|--5X--|--5X--|---------------|
: \_______________4X___________________/\_________________2X_________________/

Then, as a finger-plucking example (or at least that's my assumption), we have good ol' Anesthesia:

||-----------------------------|-----------------|
||-o-7-7---9-9---10-10---9-9---|-7-7---6-6---7---|
||-o-----0-----0-------0-----0-|-----0-----0---0-|
||-----------------------------|-----------------|
e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e q q
[ 3 ] [ 3 ] [ 3 ] [ 3 ] [ 3 ] [ 3 ]

So here comes my question: aside from the obvious "start slow and build up" advice, are there any other tips you can give me for playing patterns like the above? For example, in the picking example, is there a certain picking pattern that you would recommend or think would be easier (like picking down on each note or trying an alternating pattern of some sort). Same goes for the finger-playing example, is there a certain finger pattern that might be easier?

Thanks

Try raking. Seems like the best technique for what I'm assuming you're asking.

well first of all, what fingers do you use? Do you use your thumb?

Normally when I finger pluck it's just with index/middle, so I don't have very good motion if I include my thumb

Well I personally don't find those too hard to play just using imim or mimi

typically for stuff like that I just play and don't focus on my plucking hand

usually my body will figure out by itself what's most comfortable

mimi is what I got by playing these songs anyway

if that don't work try raking, like: mm (two in a rake) then i
