Before you guys start flamming plz READ..

I am a 100% fingerstyle player, i personally dislike the pick, but me and my friends want to play some guns and roses songs and i pretty much got duff's tone down, but im lacking that sharp sound the pick gets, the problem i have is that..

i dont fcking know how to use a pick:angry: i mean i hold it between index and thumb but when i play it makes this scratchy sound which i freaking hate.. any tips?

Helped me to play with a pick. Just holding it the way they show makes it so much easier to play.

try using a thicker pick?

and make sure you're just using the pick to go straight down and up. its the side-to-side movement that makes the scratchy sound.

look on youtube for pick technique vids for pointers.

Follow the pick instructions in that above post.

Use a thick pick, with a less round/more sharp point...

Something like this guy...in 1.5mm or 2.0mm...

http://www.jimdunlop.com/index.php?page=products/pip&id=20&pmh=products/picks

Achieving quality tone with a pick requires a bit of discipline in the wrist/fingers. Hold the pick fairly close to it's point (or rather, closer to the point than further to the point, if that makes sense).

With a thicker pick, you can "dig" into the strings more. Work on achieving a bold, clean sound, without slipping on the strings (ie. the scratching tone you hear).

When picking, try to achieve a twisting motion with the wrist. Think of the motion your hand does when opening a door knob. This is what you want to emulate.

All of this will allow for much more control and natural response with a pick.

i've never liked thick picks on bass. too much attack/rattle. i use around .71.

yeah, thick picks for the lose, getting a nice medium pick however gives great tone for playing metal or punk though. Depends, but whenever I'm bored nad play along to meshuggah, i have to use a plectrum or the tone will suck

Thick picks with proper technique will you give you a much rounder response and far greater control than any pansy medium or light picks.

Pansy picks sound bomb-diggity with acoustic guitars though.

And you will die. Period. You will implode when the song is finished.

"Ben Lesser, Ben Lesser

This music sounds too familiar

And yes I stole these chords from some random Sarah Evans song, but damnit

Then the Casual Came, And the only one to Blame

Did you ever thing you’d be pwned by country
Well, you twat, just guess again
If you have sideburns and your gay, you see that now you know
Your parents must have named you ben

Yeah, you just were schooled by country
And now the Bass Forum hates you times ten

Yeah. The guitar was in tune with itself, but not in tune according to standard 440hz. I did a lot of my recording like then when I used just an acoustic and me.

Didn't matter so much though because it was all relatively in tune.

Sammy_L_D

Probably intonation then. It was definitely out.

What kind of guitar is it?

Sablate McNuff
12-21-2007, 12:19 PM
An Ibanez Acoustic-Electric.

I remember that I added some mild flange or chorus to it (one of those two). That might be what you're hearing.

Sammy_L_D
12-21-2007, 12:21 PM
That would definitely do it.

Sablate McNuff

Yeah. That guitar has phenomenal intonation. I inherited it from my uncle.

Sablate McNuff
12-21-2007, 12:39 PM
Truth be told, I'm not sure. I haven't played it in a while (most of my guitar equipment is at my parents' house), so I don't know. I'd say probably in the range of 1999-2001.

My Ibanez AE has TERRIBLE intonation on the E string. The G on the E string and the open E string are no where near a minor third. I have to tune that string depending on the key I'm playing in.

If anyone would like to send me money for a new guitar, feel free! :)

Akira

You know you can adjust the intonation, right?

When I used to use a pick on bass I used the .88mm Dunlop nylons. For GnR type stuff you shouldn't need anything thicker. Thicker picks are more important if you're doing fast alternate picking type of stuff or chords. I was able to get a good attack, similar to old Jane's Addiction, Filter and Tool (46 & 2 intro is recorded with a pick)
