the store has a vintage lyle hollowbody bass that doesn't work for $50. it may be that the guy before that owned it was an idiot. the strings were from an upright bass, only cut short, and then they CUT A HOLE in the back of it to have acess to the electronics. it also has a vint. bigsby bridge and 2 vint. humbuckers
so far i am thinking that the nut needs to be replaced because the upright strings brobably outstretched the groves. a good look at the wiring would help too. i hope i do nt need to replace the pickups and whatnot. i think i can fix the hole just by shaping it, and adding an circut acces panel like u see on some guitars and basses.
what possible things might there be to do to get it to work? and how much would it cost?
i am not familiar with the circuits and what not. does anyone have a good blue print of it?

Rewire or maybe just a resolder? If so, not much at all.
Have you actually tried it yet?

imo this will be sweet when its done. everything is in a vintage binding, the finish is a natural worn cherry with it being darker around the edge to give it a sunburst look, the neck is removeable (think i might satin it), its a short scale, and a hollowbody, the neck it very odd because it hass a thin fretboard, and an unbelivably fat c shape (i like), a bigsby bridge (probably going to be a hard to adjust), and several other unusual features that i really like. i just don't want to spend $50, and find out that it will take a couple hundred to make it playable.

Or in your case a couple of hundred to screw a new neck to it, sand with newspaper and apply a satin finish

does the fretboard look ebony or rosewood? how do i tell the difference

Ebony is more black and rosewood is more brown but that's not to say it couldn't be stained darker. Most older Japanese bass neck are either rosewood or maple.
